“Why is it that we have to fly to this party rather than Apparate?” asked Remus. He shifted on the seat of the motorbike, shivering in anticipation of the rush of cold wind that would soon be his fate.
“Because the theme is all about the skies and the heavens,” Sirius answered. “And, as you know, I take themes rather seriously.”
“Of course you do,” muttered Remus, trying to conceal a smile. “You take bloody everything rather --” but the last of his words were drowned out by Sirius’s barking laugh and the roar of the engine.
Twenty frozen, wind-blown minutes later, they arrived at their destination and were greeted by three smiling Muggles clutching clipboards. They introduced themselves as
pica_scribit,
cackling_madly, and
brighty18.
“Welcome!” said Brighty, pinning a single white rose on the lapel of each man’s dress robes. “Thank you for joining us as our guests of honor!”
“This will be fun,” added Cackling_Madly. “And you get to make the big announcement, too.” She raised an eyebrow and pointed to her clipboard with a grin.
“Here we go,” whispered Pica_Scribit, throwing wide a set of double doors to reveal a large ballroom, glittering with golden stars, silver moons, and beautiful people.
The raucous crowd of authors, artists, and general R/S lovers fell silent as the two wizards and three Mods entered the room. A tuxedo-clad waiter -- looking curiously like Stan Shunpike -- appeared out of nowhere, offering five blue drinks on a silver tray.
“Blue Skyy martinis. How clever,” chuckled Remus. He was finally warming up after the ride, and beginning to genuinely enjoy himself.
“Welcome!” cried Sirius, raising his glass.
The crowd exploded into applause.
“So, who won?” asked a member of the audience.
“Well, darling, since you asked…” began Sirius with a smirk -- but his mouth snapped shut with a Silencing Charm.
“But first, some statistics!” broke in Remus, perhaps a little too excited by the prospect of spreadsheets and facts. He popped on a pair of half-moon reading glasses and pulled a large scroll from the pocket of his dress robes. Sirius sighed in dismay at the length of the parchment, but Remus shushed him with a small shake of his head. “Hem hem…”
He unrolled the scroll and began to read. “We began the 2015 RS Games with seventy participants from at least fifteen countries, including Austria, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, New Zealand, Norway…”
“Oh! I love Norway!” broke in Sirius.
Remus shot him a look. Yes, he loved Norway, too, but this was neither the time nor the place. He gave his lover a slight smile, but rolled his eyes and continued, “... the Philippines, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and the USA.”
“Over sixteen US states, too!” said Sirius, adding, “Though I’m quite sure Texas should count as two because it’s so big.”
“That’s ridiculous logic,” laughed Remus. “Size has nothing to do with it.”
“That’s not what you said last night,” Sirius retorted.
Brighty cleared her throat loudly. “Going on…” she said hopefully.
“Okay,” Remus sighed, adjusting his glasses. “Here’s another interesting fact: you all wrote a total of well over 416,000 words, not including the words that appeared in the lovely songs and art pieces. This year’s Games had a total of fifty submissions.”
“And all of them were brilliant,” added Sirius, reaching for another Blue Skyy martini.
Once again, the entire room broke into applause, and Sirius smiled to himself as he took a long gulp. Who knew how to work a crowd? He did!
Remus treated the audience to his best professorial glare and continued, “Overall, we received almost exactly 500 votes and even more comments, all of them positive and glowing. Also --”
“Here’s another fun fact,” Sirius interrupted. “Some of the entries with the fewest comments actually got the some of the highest scores!”
“Really?” asked an audience member.
“Yes, love, it’s true!” replied Sirius with a wink.
Remus, having had quite enough of his lover stealing the spotlight, gave Sirius a playful shove followed by a small kiss on the cheek. He paused dramatically before turning to the audience and saying, “Yeah, well my Team was supremely organized and responsible, with only five team members dropping out, compared to your thirteen…”
Team Moon gave a loud cheer.
Sirius shook his head and flashed a winning smile. “Sure, but my Team -- much like myself -- is clever and resourceful, and managed to rally and bounce back!”
A huge cheer went up from Team Star.
“Might we get to the actual point?” chorused the Mods.
“Surely, my dears,” answered Sirius. He pulled an envelope from his pocket and handed it to Remus, saying, “You do the honors, my love. You deserve it.”
The room fell silent and Remus tore open the envelope. He gave the audience a shy smile and whispered, “And the winner is…”
TEAM STAR!
Yes, folks, Team Star took the prize with a total of 459.832 points. Team Moon, meanwhile, was super close behind with 446.162 points. Even closer are the averages. Team Star averaged 18.39328 points per submission, while Team Moon averaged 17.8466 per entry.
Team Star awards can be found
here.
“But you know who the REAL winners are?” asked Sirius, waving his arms excitedly. “ALL of you! You are all winners and you are all fabulous!”
“Here, here,” added Remus, toasting the room with his glass.
And they are right, of course; you are ALL winners! 2015 brought some of the best-received R/S works the Games have ever seen. Words like “amazing” and “outstanding” are not nearly good enough to describe the quality of this year’s submissions.
With that in mind, Team Moon awards can be found
here.
But wait… there are more awards! Below are the Special Awards, nominated by you the participants!
