Wow, this was a very dark tale, beyond even the usual angst. I love angst and I love this story too but it is so difficult to get though. With every line you reveal just how cruel this world is, from registration, to rations to inability to use magic, to radiation and snow and to death if you are chosen. It just builds and builds. Poor Remus and poor Sirius. And there is no happy ending here at all.

You constructed your story so well. April is the cruelest month indeed.
Great job.

You're an evil, evil person and I love you. The soul of this fic is tortured yet glorious, monstrous yet human I almost hope Remus chooses to kill himself so his treasured flesh rots and becomes useless to the old bastard...
No more words, only tears.

This is the kind of story that was painful to read, yet the expertly crafted atmosphere was so impressive that in some ways it was a joy to read as well. But oh my, so so dark. So without hope. And so well done.

wow. this was depressing, but stunning. it was like the fan fic version of that movie with ellem burstyn and jared leto. what was it called? "requiem for a dream?" i remember that movie ended with everyone in fetal position and that is totally what i feel like doing right now. but also like that movie it is so perfect in form and craftsmanship. your characters were spot in. i loved how sirius asks these questions he already knows the answer to. it seemed so lovely and so futile all at once. much like this story.

you broke my heart, mystery author, but is a gorgeous sort of way.

This is utterly gorgeous and devastating. You've done a superb job setting up the world here, scattering just enough detail throughout to pique curiosity and slowly build a very believable scenario. Like the wizard sneezing and asking Remus if he was afraid--little touches like that really added to this story and made it all the more real. The isolation Remus feels from his friends who try but can't know what he's going through felt very authentic as well, especially when he recalls looking through the obituaries in the newspaper "searching for something he didn't know how to find." Just one of many quotable lines in this very powerful piece. And the ending, with Remus walking outside without his suit and then Sirius doing the same, and the closing lines--well, that was powerful and exquisite. Remarkable story that effectively captures the tragedy of this couple in a way I haven't seen done. And that's saying something.
