A lot of the themes and associations in this happened pretty much by accident. It was written as a pinch-hit and about the only thing going through my head other than the scene in front of me was "omg must finish this now oh god oh god write faster!!1!" XD. I hadn't thought about the records as Remus' connection back to all the people and things that he loves, a way to partake postively of a world that he fears/knows won't treat him any better than the wizarding one - but you're right, they are. Thank you, muses! (Glad to know at least one of us knows what we're doing XD)
In short fiction, these kinds of surface glances with so much swirling underneath them are among my favourite things to write. It's all allusion and guesswork and half-finished sentences, laying out just the right details to form a gradual picture of what their relationship was like. After three months spent writing a dense, introspective and plot-heavy epic, it was nice to sit back and just write out what was happening, putting in the barest hints of things here and there - like quick sketches after painting the Sistine Chapel ;D
Take Moony to Egypt, winter solstice - Christmas present? That was one of my favourite lines in this, too. He doesn't even think about it, no caveats or qualifiers - Remus wants to go, thus Sirius will make it happen. I reckon he'd try to indulge all of his friends in their whims if he could, but with Remus there's no sense that he's doing it as a favour or as a gracious benefactor. Remus wants to see the Temple of Karnak, and the world won't be right or just until he does. I think that line more than any demonstrates just how much a part of Sirius' life Remus has become ♥
