Fall Break ended too soon, but I’m sure that statement is made over and over again by just about everyone who is returning to school. It was the first time I got to go home in over two months. The last time I went home was around July, I think. I mean, I saw them at my Aunt’s Wedding, and when my sister came up to visit me, and when they all came to Knoxville to surprise me for the afternoon a few weekends ago, but nothing compares to just going back for four days and doing nothing but normal things with them.
The one thing we did do was celebrate Janey and my birthdays (Janey turning 13 and me, 21). My family made a huge dinner on Saturday: Risotto, Stuffed Mushrooms, and Apple Pie. My parents bought Janey a capo and glass slide for her guitar, as well as officially saying that the guitar is hers and not my fathers. She also got a really nice pair of sewing scissors. I bought her an electric grand piano that I’ve been saving for since she fell in love with Emily’s back in June (and I half-jokingly informed her not to expect anything for Christmas).
I tried to tell my family not to get me anything, but they are deaf and got me a bunch of wonderful things. Janey sewed me a really awesome brown and black apron, and bought me “The Joy of Cooking” which is literally the best cook book known the man. My parents bought me a very nice Wok, a few casserole dishes, and the best gift I’ve ever gotten: a REAL chef’s knife. I almost cried I was so happy. I spent the rest of the weekend cooking and, more importantly, chopping whatever they would throw at me. Mom and Dad told me they had budgeted for a while so that they could get me stuff that would last the rest of my life, and I don’t think they could have gotten me anything better.
Now, onto my current dilemma. How do I make beer bread (Yum!) without buying a six-pack of beer (ick).
