I have to agree, for the most part. I don't think Rey is a dull character in the first half though. While very confident she had weaknesses in the first half. She was struggling to fend for herself and she was clearly unable to stand up to the guy exploiting her by under-paying her for her salvaged items. When she thinks Finn is part of the Resistance there's a certain giddiness to her, since while she didn't automatically give him respect she did respect the Resistance movement she believed he worked for. She's tough and stoic, but she has heard stories about the Rebels fighting the Empire and so she's suddenly eager to make a good impression people she thinks are linked to the Rebellion or the Resistance.
But then she became "THE CHOSEN ONE" in the second half. I thought there was going to be a cool sequence of her slowly discovering her force powers, but when she 'hides' in plain view of the hangar bay (hence how Finn spots her later) that whole sequence seems to end prematurely. She just seems to become superpowered and there's no real connection between super-powerful Rey and the desert-dwelling scavenger in the first half.
I'm surprised that Finn wasn't more consistently the central focus. The whole plot REALLY felt tied to his character, the way I saw it. He starts the film desperate to get away from the horror he saw on Jakku and the New Order organisation which raised him to take part in it. He keeps being expected to go back to Jakku and he's refusing to be involved. He's essentially running away from a terrifying past. But then his recently-forged friendship with Rey leads him to finally make the decision to go back and face what he had been running away from throughout the first half. That's a proper character arc and I wish Rey's arc had been as strong.
I think we're all hoping for a more solid entry in the franchise next time. I absolutely echo that sentiment.
