Below is a list of my favorite movies released during the 1990s:

FAVORITE MOVIES OF THE 1990s

1. "L.A. Confidential" (1997) - Not only is Curtis Hanson's adaptation of James Ellroy's 1990 novel about a trio of L.A.P.D. cops my favorite movie from the 90s, but also one of my all time favorite movies, period. The movie starred Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Danny DeVito, James Cromwell and Oscar winner Kim Basinger.

2. "Shakespeare in Love" (1998) - Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard wrote this exquisite tale about William Shakespeare's romance with the daughter of a wealthy merchant in Elizabethan England, and how it inspired him to write "Romeo and Juliet". Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush, Tom Wilkinson, Colin Firth, and Ben Affleck co-starred with Oscar winners Gwenyth Paltrow and Judi Dench.

3. "Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (1999) - George Lucas released the first of a three-part prequel to the original "STAR WARS" saga about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the Jedi Order. Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Jake Lloyd starred.

4. "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) - Ang Lee directed this superb adaptation of Jane Austen's 1811 novel about the romantic travails of two sisters in early 19th century England. Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant starred.

5. "Clear and Present Danger" (1994) - Philip Noyce directed Harrison Ford in this excellent adaptation of Tom Clancy's 1989 novel about Jack Ryan being caught up in a conflict between a Columbian drug dealer and a vengeful President of the United States. Willem Dafoe, Joaquim de Almeida, Anne Archer and Donald Moffat co-starred.

6. "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" (1997) - Steven Spielberg directed this witty sequel to the 1993 blockbuster about efforts of Ian Malcolm and a research team sent to the Jurassic Park Site B island by John Hammond, to study the dinosaurs there and disrupt the agenda of another team led by Hammond's nephew. Adapted from Michael Crichton's 1995 novel, the movie starred Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, Pete Postlethwaite, Arlis Howard and Richard Attenborough.

7. "Howard's End" (1992) - Ismail Merchant produced and James Ivory directed this superb adaptation of E.M. Foster's 1910 novel about class relations in early 20th century England. Oscar winner Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham-Carter and Samuel West starred.

8. "Speed" (1994) - Jan de Bont directed this excellent action thriller about the efforts of a L.A.P.D. police officer to prevent a bomb exploding aboard a city bus by keeping its speed above 50 mph. Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, Joe Morton and Jeff Daniels starred.

9. "Jurassic Park" (1993) - Steven Spielberg directed this first-rate adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1990 novel about a theme park featuring cloned dinosaurs that goes amok on a small Costa Rican island. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello and Richard Attenborough.

10. "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999) - Anthony Minghella directed this excellent adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel about an American underachiever sent to Europe to retrieve the rich and spoiled son of a millionaire.
