So, I caught up on the past five episodes of Doctor Who all at once. By the way,
jproque is god, and I owe him, uhm... Things.
In short, short summary, as I'm too lazy to go through each one. Scroll past if you don't want spoilers.
Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel - Not too bad. I cried over Mickey a lot, but the episodes were certainly gearing one up to see him leave. I thought it was done in a rather effective way. He had a lot for him there, and he actually had a purpose that wasn't always combed over by the Doctor and Rose. Honestly, I was really sick of them treating him like the third wheel, and even more pleased at how utterly he saved London and them. Good show.
By the way, Rose's father having some vague weirdass connection thing to Rose, even though it wasn't a rip on "Father's Day" too terribly much still pissed me off. Shouldn'tve happened. That was a little bit of sentimental fuckery that I could've done without. His reaction to her at the end of Age of Steel was appropriate, though.
Oh, and the Giant Cyberman Boss was SILLY. "I'm the leader of these people, so I should look just like them, only with more hoses, larger, and with a shiny metal chair!" Ah, Doctor Who, some things never change.
The Idiot's Lantern - A good idea gone bad. I really didn't care for it too terribly much. By the way, episode, could you slap the Feminine Liberation Message around a little more, please? I don't think I got it the first 5 times. I do like the time period in which it took place, but that's about it.
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - SO MUCH LOVE. This is my favorite story arc of the new season, by far, and tied (or slightly higher) than The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances from last season. I'm a sucker for religious symbolism and religious studies, and I always have been. Throw in the additional metaphors from earlier episodes, allusions to Satan, challenging the Doctor's beliefs in reality, the need to "fall", and confronting the Beast itself? Also, having faith in Rose? OMG JUDEO-CHRISTIAN SYMBOLISM!!!1
Furthermore, the support characters were great. I actually gave a damn about most all of them. They characterized very well, and I grew attached to them over the two episodes. Rose taking charge and not bumbling around in The Satan Pit was wonderful, and the ending was quite clever.
Except for the fact that Rose was rather dumb, as she shouldn't have had any way to know there was a second emergency shield that would seal the ship after the glass broke. That was just ridiculous. Plot device, CREATE! Boo. Otherwise, not too shabby at all.
OH OH OH! And when approaching the Pit, the Doctor of all people says to walk away!? Brilliant. Where angels fear to tread. There are even some things beyond him, and I LOVED that in this episode. Just... gah. So much love.
And he should've told Ida to tell Rose that he loved her, but the "She knows" thing was cute, if not a cop out to avoid death threats from all angry DW fans that The Doctor Loves Rose and all of that crap.
