The sway of the palm trees on a distant island, the sun setting on crystalline seas casting a golden glow over the white sand beaches. A gentle trade wind fills your sails as you notice the port in the distance; the cry of “Land Ho!” from the lookout overhead only fills your crew with delight. Here, your men will find relaxation from the trials of the sea.
This is the Port of Tortuga, a familiar name for those sailing among these seas. It is a bustling port town on the verge of a jungle, where men and women of all calibers gather. Pirates, naval officers, merchants; all eventually find themselves here at the Gateway to this grand ocean. Ladies of the night beckon to you with sweet smiles as you pass; the sound of drunken sailors singing loud, bawdy songs filter out into the crowded streets. This place calls to you, summoning you to rest from a long voyage.
Every day a dozen ships come in by air, sea or even from below the water’s surface. Most of you are familiar with this harsh but adventurous life on the sea, but lately, there has been talk of strangers arriving by some strange force; those not like the rest of you, who claim to be from ‘other worlds’.
But for all sailors, their love and lady will always be the sea, and her aquamarine fingers summon you to return after not too long. Though Her Majesty the Queen has been trying to keep a nice, upstanding little colony just a few days sail away, it has proved to only be a challenge in the eyes of most buccaneers, despite the Navy’s best efforts.
Other sailors speak of islands on the far seas, exotic locales. Stories of cities of gold guarded by fierce demons, and hidden treasure spark the fire of adventure in even the most staid of souls, and have caused many to set sail to seek their fortunes.
But for those of you displaced in this strange world of water, something else calls you to the sea. Rumor of a mystical item; an artifact says the legend; that can return you to your home. But in order to obtain such an item, you must brave the seas and overcome its many tests and trials. You must prove your salt against all that the Lady Ocean can throw against you, or be swallowed below the waves and cast into Davy Jones’ Locker.
