When you get into your apartment, you grab a couple of towels. You give one to her, but she just holds it, shell-shocked. You pretend it's from the rain, that she's been spoiled by L.A. weather.
"Do you want something? Tea to warm you up?"
She stares at you. "Are you going to ignore that?"
Of course. "What?"
"You just kissed me."
And it had seemed like a good idea at the time. You and her, running through the rain until your feet hurt too much to keep the pace. She made some joke about her presence causing New York to flood. "Where is an arc when you need one?" It wasn't funny, but she laughed so you did, too. She looked improbably beautiful drenched, the raindrops dotting her face. And it had been awhile since you really *wanted* to kiss someone, didn't just wish to use someone's lips as proof that your heart was no longer broken.
And, now, this.
"I know."
"I know you know. I was looking for an explanation."
You could exploit her need to see you as a china doll, blink your eyes and say you don't know what you were thinking. Blame it on him and let your friendship return to normal. But you've always hated cop-outs. "I wanted to kiss you. So I did."
She relaxes, holding the towel with two fingers instead of a clenched fist. "Is it really that easy?"
"I thought so."
She throws the towel on the floor and pulls you close. This time, the kiss is no surprise to either of you.
