In my opinion, while Dahlia is considered the devil, I've never actually seen her try to hurt someone for absolutely no reason, like kicking puppies or something. She's not a sadist, she's incredibly selfish and greedy and vengeful. Basically, very screwed up. When she feels someone has wronged her, she will stop at nothing to get them back (i.e. Mia Feeeeyyyyyy Miiiiiaaaa Feeeyyyy MIA FEY MIA FEY MIA FEY)

Dahlia's smart. But she's not cleveri>, nor does she seem to think things through. Otherwise, why would all her schemes fail so badly each time? She strikes me as the type who plans out the actual crime in detail, but then fails to plan the cleaning up afterward part. One example would be when she poisons Diego, she just passed off the necklace to the first person she saw, with no thoughts as to how she'll get it back if necessary.

And while yes, she did let Iris try to get it back for her, I feel it was more that Dahlia thought Iris was too trusting/loving/sweet and predictable to turn on her, rather than actually trusting her. I doubt Dahlia trusts anyone, but it's that she trusts in her ability to manipulate people. But only to a certain extent, because the only people she actually MANIPULATES are Iris, who is way too sweet to backstab her, Feenie, who is just shy of complete idiocy, and Terry, who seems to be the 'loving ogre'. I mean, with young!Miles and the Judge and Payne, she just flashes them some pretty smiles to butter them up.

tl;dr - Dahlia doesn't plan ahead much for what comes after the crime, she only commits crimes for personal gain or revenge, and she's not all that great at manipulating people who aren't naive and/or idiots.
