Okay, haven't read the recent Loveless volumes, to be honest. But what I remember is that he's extremely mature for a twelve year old, and has no problems taking care of himself. He has baggage - LOTS of it - but he hides it well so as not to appear weak. He takes a long time to open up to people, but it's up to you as to whether this is because he's callous of because he doesn't want to get hurt. I'd go with the second, but I'm a sucker for that kind of thing. Also, once he does open up to somebody, they really matter to him, and he can be very protective. I'm thinking of the girls he chewed out for bullying... The pigtailed girl. Damn, it has been a long time. Brb, rereading.
He's very driven, which comes across as weird in a kid. When he wants something and is sure he wants it; taking pictures, beating another team, and especially finding Soubi's killer, he will keep going after it, no matter what he has to do. He's even willing to go against his mother, something he'd normally never do (or at least hide more subtly). And he's willing to use people (i.e. Soubi) to get what he wants, if he wants it badly enough.
Sorry this was so shallow. If I'd read it in the last few weeks, I could give you more. :m
