So I've had quite a few people discuss with me how they enjoy the idea of significant characters (namely themselves) becoming Gym Leaders. And just about everyone has a favorite type these days as well, if not two or more. On a separate and still to be segway'd topic, Jay and I tried Shoddy Battle for the first time earlier with our theme teams - his "story" team based on his character Simon and my Ice team which I hoped to implement in Platinum and may yet in SoulSilver. We had a lot of fun with it, and I think I have an idea on how to make it even more enjoyable.

Pokemon Tournament: Locust Pack Gym Leaders

Here's what I have outlined so far:
1. At least 6 people choosing 2 types each.
2. Different types between each trainer, so in the above condition 12 of the 17 types would be in use.
3. If two trainers choose the same type they must battle one another for the right to use that type.
4. Each trainer will give a top 5 list so that if they lose they may move down to their 3rd, 4th or 5th favorite - depending on the number of shared types there are.
5. If we have 6 trainers we can do 2 brackets worth of battles - the first bracket determines gym leaders 1-6 and the second bracket determines gym leaders 7, 8, and the Elite Four.
6. People I thought would be interested include: Chase, Jay, Haney, Ian, Myself, Ross and Craig (all of the people who have characters in the story.) Of course if anyone else reading this wants to join in please go ahead and post a comment with your top 5 type choices.
7. The first bracket will contain no items, except berries (Here is a list of acceptable berries: numbers 1-64 http://www.serebii.net/berrydex-dp/ )
8. The second bracket will allow most items available to trainers in the games, I can't think of any that would be illegal off the top of my head.
9. All battles will be level 100.
10. Once the battlers are decided a majority of us will try to meet in real life to write up the bracket at random (Probably using dice to determine who battles whom) that way no one is suspected of "setting up" someone to lose.
11. The battles will not be timed.
12. All of your Pokemon must know at least 1 move of your "type." Breed moves and TMs are acceptable otherwise. A trainer should maximize the potential of their pokemon, either covering their weaknesses or playing to the strengths (STAB.)
13. Members of the bracket who are not battling while other members are battling are allowed to watch the fights, even if they have not seen the contestants' pokemon before.
14. If we have more than 6 people then hopefully we will hit 8 therefore allowing for people to be gym leaders 1-8 even if we don't make it to the elite four bracket. However, if we have only 7 trainers then we will battle for gyms 1-8, elite four, champion 1 and champion 2 (i.e. Gary and Ash, Cynthia and Diamond, Lance and Gold.)
15. This means there will be a loser's bracket, in example: players A,B,C,D battle. A fights B, C fights D. A loses and D loses. B and C fight ; A and D fight. B wins - 4th Gym, C - 3rd Gym, A loses - 1st Gym, D - 2nd Gym. Extrapolate that to include 6-8 people there should be 3 matches per trainer then.
16. All battles would discourage the use the Legendaries/Battle Tower Forbiddens. Trying to stick to UU and OU if we can, may have to set a cap on number of Ubers allowed.

A Larger Sample Bracket:
A v B C v D E v F H v G
Win: A, D, F, G
Lose: B, C, E, H
A v D F v G B v C E v H
Win: D, F (2-0) B, H (1-1)
Lose: A, G (1-1), C, E (0-2)
D v F B v H A v G C v E
Win: D (3-0), H (2-1), A (2-1), E (1-2)
Lose: F (2-1), B (1-2), G (1-2), C (0-3)
Gyms:
8: D ; 7: F ; 6: A ; 5: G ; 4: H ; 3: B ; 2: E ; 1: C

E may have the same record as G but the only trainer it beat was C, who lost all his matches. On the other hand, G lost to F who went on to battle in the finals.

If the need arises a second set of matches could occur to try to give everyone a diverse record and tie breakers could be set to settle disputes. But under this system a minimum of three matches will be used to determine Gym Number.

I want it noted that I probably wouldn't use these numbers for anything in my story, but if I ever get to the point where one of the characters does become a gym leader I may write a version of the battle that takes place as part of the trials of becoming a gym leader.

If you have any other ideas, suggestions, or interest please post. I would love to get this in by early April. Hell if everyone is free the same time/day we could get the whole thing done in a couple hours. This is for the fun of enjoying pokemon. If you want help with ideas for how to set up your pokemon, as I would request you try to design the team on your own (without speaking to others), feel free to use Smogon, Serebii or Bulbapedia to help you make the team you want.

Last, but not least, my type 5 choices:
**Ice
*Dark
Ghost
Psychic
Water
The two that are marked are my selected types for the bracket matches, the double marked is the option for a single bracket tournament. If other people select either of those 2 I will battle them and the winner gets the right to use the selected type.

Obviously there is strategy that can be used here. If you want to pick a type you know no else will probably use just so you can guarantee ownership of it you can, or you can pick a type that you know others will use and battle for ownership to make someone lose the type they like (cause you're an ass.) If you do fight someone over the selected type there are a couple rules:
1. Both trainers must use pokemon who have the selected type as at least 1 of their two types, and have at least 1 move of that type. The goal here is to encourage usage of pokemon powers, and diverse movesets to overcome your own weaknesses.
2. This fight has no bearing on the bracket placement for the tournament so you could end up fighting someone for a type and then fighting them again in the first round. Bracket placements will be random.
