Jo walked a few feet behind the group of giggling girls, head down but listening to every word.
"Did you see that skirt? She stood up and I swear I saw vag. I'm totally scarred for life!"
The group laughed in unison, high-pitched and forced like the nervous bleating of sheep.
One of the newer additions added her own bit of gossip. "Jason Roberts didn't look too scarred. He spent most of third period dropping his pencil to get a better look."
The group paused, waiting for the Queen Bee's reaction. "Whore."
One word and the girl in the perhaps too-short skirt had been defined, an indelible label slapped across her that she'd likely never shake.
Jo slowed at her classroom door, feeling a little bad for the nameless girl. On the other hand, the girl had to have known what would happen.
And really, was "whore" any worse than lesbo, freak, or the other things people said behind her back?
Who cared what they said anyway? They had no idea what was out there, waiting in the dark.
It was cruel but Jo still smiled at the label they all wore unawares, the label she would never wear.
"Bait."
END.
