Veronica smiled as she opened the door. "I was hoping it would be you..."
He flashed a dazzling white smile back at her and she momentarily lost coherent thought. "Thank you, Miss Mars. Sorry it took us so long to drop by. We had a lot of clean up at the site. May we...?"
Embarrassed at the hypnotizing effect of his smile, she hastily stepped aside motioning the two gentlemen inside.
She wasn’t at her bushy-tailed brightest at 3 am, which was her excuse for the fact the three of them stood there, staring silently at each other for at least five minutes before she realized her rudeness and asked them to have a seat.
"So, Agent Jay, Agent Kay - Are those with an ‘ay’ or just the letters?"
"Just letters, ma’am."
Wow. Agent K spoke. She didn’t know he could do that. She had barely recovered from her surprise when he did it again, this time without the ma’am. Wise move on his part.
"If you could tell us exactly what happened tonight, every detail..."
Agent J frowned at him. "K, the girl’s had a rough night. It wouldn’t kill you to ease into this conversation. Remember what we talked about?"
Looking like he was swallowing a rancid lemon, Agent K smiled - a truly terrifying sight - and tried again. "How is your father doing, Miss Mars?"
"The doctor’s said he’s gonna be okay, but that’s not why you came here," Veronica offered, eager to get to the point. "You’re here to tell me why Aaron Echolls had sparks shooting out the side of his face and how he managed to punch through a solid glass door without a scratch. So spill."
She crossed her arms, settled back in the chair and waited. She didn’t have to wait long. Agent K seemed relieved not to have to beat around the bush.
"You told us at the scene that you were attacked by Mr. Echolls, who was hiding in the back seat of your car?"
"Yeah, you’d think I would have paid a little more attention to the teachings of teen slasher flicks. They’re always hiding in the back seat of the car."
Agent J laughed, but turned it into a snort as Agent K glared at him and continued. "Why would he attack you?"
Veronica sighed. "This is going to take a while."
She got up and headed for the fridge. "Can I get you guys anything? Coke, OJ, water..." she moved aside some lingering “water” bottles. "Vodka?"
They both declined and she grabbed a soda and tried to think where to start.
Half an hour later, she had managed to neatly summarize the last year of her life. At the agent’s prompting, she went back through the events of that evening. She told them about finding the tapes that Lilly had hidden and the truly traumatizing footage of her best friend getting it on with her boyfriend’s dad. She didn’t know why, but she just felt like she could trust these men. After all, they had saved her life.
They had been the ones to open the abandoned freezer and let her out. They assured her that her father was fine, though unconscious. They were the ones who had run off after Aaron long before the police had arrived.
She got to the part about crashing her car and Agent J seemed impressed. "Quick thinking. Daddy Mars should be proud."
Veronica grinned. Her dad would be proud, assuming he remembered much of the night when he woke up. "Anyway, so Aaron flew into the dash and was out for the count. I grabbed the tapes and was reaching for my cell when...Well, I feel stupid saying this."
Agent K managed a warmth she hadn’t thought him capable of. "Just tell us what you think you saw, Miss Mars."
"Only if you stop calling me Miss Mars. Veronica is fine." Agent K nodded and she continued. "Well, I was reaching for my cell, keeping an eye on him, and he moved. I thought he was waking up or something but...God, this is crazy. I thought I saw sparks - inside his ear."
When neither agent laughed outright at that, she went on.
"I watched, but it didn’t do it again. But there was - sort of seam along his jaw line. Really odd. I’d never noticed it before and I think most people would think it was from plastic surgery or something, except when I saw it...there was light, coming from inside his head. Like a door was open a crack."
Agent J nodded. "And that was all you saw?"
"Yeah, and the window thing I already told you. So - what was that all about? You guys know. I know you know."
The agents exchanged a practiced look. Agent K took a deep breath. "Aaron Echolls is an alien. Baltian, to be exact."
Veronica just stared. "Aaron Echolls is an alien."
She let the idea sort of roll around in her head. "You know - that actually makes sense. He always sorta gave me the creeps. And have you ever seen his movies? That explains A LOT!"
She was just getting used to that idea when something occurred to her. "Wait - Is Logan an alien?"
"Who?"
Her breath was coming in short gasps and it felt like there was a steel band around her chest. “LOGAN ECHOLLS! Aaron’s son? Oh my God, IS LOGAN AN ALIEN?"
Agent J reached out to calm her, but she swatted his hand aside and started pacing.
"Not as far as we know. We believe he is the result of a visit to a, um..." Agent J cleared his throat. "A visit to a sperm bank."
Veronica could only hear the first part of what he said over the blood pounding in her ears. "Not as far as you know?! I’ve already spent months thinking I sucked face with my brother and now you tell me my last boyfriend, well sort of boyfriend - whatever - MIGHT be an alien..."
Agent K reached into into suit pocked and handed a long silver tube to Agent J. Agent J looked at it a bit sadly but Veronica showed no signs of calming down. He slipped on his shades and Agent K did the same.
"Veronica?"
She turned at the sound of Agent J's voice and was blinded by a flash of light.

The events of that night were pretty hazy in her mind. It was a whirlwind.
Over time, she remembered more and more until the only mystery was what had woken her at 3 am. She had trotted to the door, anticipating someone, but she couldn’t remember who.
She remembered opening the door, only to find there was no one there.
END.
