My freshman year of high school I enrolled in my first semester of Japanese. There were about 13 other kids in the class, so we all got to know each other pretty well. One of the Thai boys let me borrow his casette of X Japan's album, "Dahlia." I made myself a copy and must have listened to it hundreds of times, and thus began my great love for j-rock & visual kei (and maybe some j-pop...).
My best friend in junior high had also taken up Japanese with me, and the two of us became most obsessed with L'arc~en~Ciel. This was about at the release of "Heart," which, sadly, seems to be about the last decent record they released. It wasn't until a bit later that I discovered Malice Mizer and how beautiful & amazing they were. There are still a few bands, like Dir en Grey, or Mucc, that i think i would like to better acquaint myself with. For the time though, I very much enjoy reminiscing over old Laruku, MM, & X Japan songs, such as this one:

I used to teach myself their songs on piano, too, but listening to them now, I can tell I got the chords a bit off. Beginning to miss my piano a bit.
EDIT: After listening to Syunikiss & hearing Gackt's velvety dulcet tones, I remembered watching a hilarious interview with him talking about how he shops for pork belly. I couldn't find that particular one, but I did come across this one where he appears on the same show later and talks about Gakuto Junior. I highly recommend the last 5 minutes. o.o;;
