Some thoughts on this years Mo'vember

So here we are a week into Movember. For those of you who have been following my continuous pictorial update on facebook (and have already read this), we start week two with a respectable base. From a distance it even looks looks a proper stache and the jokes (all in good fun of course) have begun in earnest at work. I have opted to go Regent in honor of our teams namesake so expect a big push broom in the future. So far this has been a pretty fun as well as educational experience. While I have always have made it a point to be charitable, it has mostly been though more of a personal nature of contributing my time or money in direct support or in the support of my family and friends causes. This is the first time for me working is a stance to get other folks involved and stoked about something.

Why all the hoopla? I could be coy and say the reason is to grow a sweet mustache but in all seriousness it does go a bit deeper. This is not something that only happens to other folks when they get older. After seeing my mother though 3 bouts of cancer (breast cancer twice and ovarian) I remember how my heart dropped to hear how one of my best friends from high school who is younger than me was knee deep in chemo. Speaking for myself on the sidelines, and I am going to guess anyone who has seen a loved one battle cancer, it is an awful experience. Days, Weeks, Months going by where all you can do is watch them in pain and constantly wondering if their numbers will go south and always waiting on the results of the next test. Will they beat it? Will they be here next month? Next Year? Are the treatments which are making them sick actually helping or just prolonging the inevitable?

It is a terrible feeling of helplessness to watch and an experience I would not wish on my worst enemy.

Fortunately me and the rest of my family, Mum is a Cast Iron beast who refuses to die witout at least taking a small village out with her and kicked all three bouts into remission with tasteful hobnailed boots. Unfortunately this is not the case for everyone. On the upshot, as technology imroves and research is done we can learn more about about how to cure and more importantly how to prevent cancer of all stripes.

"How does a mustache help raise awareness" you may be asking?

Normally being clean shaven, I get a lot of questions and more comments on the appearance of my own dirt squirrel. To which I tell them about how Movember is working to "change the face" of mens' health. If they decide to donate, Wonderful! If at very least they take a bit of time to evaluate their own well being, that is good enough for me too. And this goes for you as well, not the the gents but the ladies as well.

This being Movember though I would ask that you take a bit of time and consider making a small donation towards research of Prostate and Testicular cancer and/or repost/retweet/reblogg/or what ever else the hell you kids are doing these days on the intertubes. If you are a guy, please educate yourself and get checked, and lastly if you have gentleman in your life, father, brother, or friend, that you haven't given a high five to in the recent past, don't wait till something bad happens and let them know you care.

Thank you and good night.
