Surefire

Regulus closed his eyes against the world. For a moment, he wanted to be no one of consequence, with a life unshackled from responsibility and supposed fate. Here, beneath the old oak in one of the less traversed gardens, he could hear the sounds of his universe and the city just beyond it. He knew this was a moment he'd want scorched into his memory, into his being, before it even began to take place. He'd known it when he awoke already in mourning.

"You know, don't you?" Sirius' voice was almost accusatory, mostly angry, and a bit hysterical.

Regulus resisted the urge to tie his brother to the tree. He's my only one, he'd reason, but if he were to be truthful he'd have to admit he lost him quite some time ago. "Yes. I don't know why you're telling me. You should have been gone with the night."

Sirius was silent for a while. "That's so predictable."

"So you're just going to walk right off, are you?" Even as he put it into words, he couldn't open his eyes to look at Sirius in what he knew was their last moment together. He didn't need to.

"No, Sirius replied, and his vagabond brilliance was palpable in his voice for his sole audience to hear. "I'm going to fly."

Regulus locked each fading footstep into his memory. He imagined for just a moment that he was free to soar as high. And as the red and gold leaves of the oncoming season fell to the earth, so did he.
