arthur/gwen fanfic: jousting fun and games PG 13

Chapter 2
It wasn’t that Gwen didn’t want Arthur staying, they had actually been getting on recently. Gwen had always thought Arthur thought she was just Morgana’s maidservant, but things had changed over the last few months and especially more recently. During the events involving Cedric and whatever had happened that night, Gwen and Arthur had had a few encounters. The first when she pushed him over to save them both from the winged creature that was about to attack them. Then there was his comment about how she surprised him. In that short space of time it was as if something changed between them and whatever it was had her worried, when he stubbornly went back out to fight whatever those creatures were. He had changed so much since Merlin’s arrival and in her opinion for the better. Yes he was still stubborn, but he thought more about others lately and well just this once he was right to want something without it being handed to him on a plate. Even if it did mean her facing her own fears and feelings.
While Gwen was deep in thought and sorting things out, Merlin was filling Arthur in on the plan……..’so I spoke to Gwen and she said it would be fine if you stayed at her house while you are undercover’ explained Merlin. ‘At Guinevere’s? Won’t Morgana wonder why she isn’t staying in the castle? Its not as if she’s being staying at her home since…..Arthur trailer off full well knowing why. ‘Morgana will be fine with it once we fill her in on everything, you know she’ll want t help’ said Merlin. ‘No you cant tell her’ Arthur said with a raised voice, ‘she will spoil it’. ‘She wont’ stated Merlin, ‘plus we are going to need her if its going to work, who else is going to be our spy within the castle and help us gather information on the other contestants as well as keeping your father happy at the same time. ‘Fine’ snapped Arthur, ‘just well just…’. ‘Leave Morgana to me’ said Merlin, ‘you just worry about the contest and Gwen’. ‘Why have I got to worry about Gwen?’ asked Arthur curiously
‘Arthur you really are a prat aren’t you!’ said Merlin. Arthur was about to tell Merlin of again for calling him a prat, but he was cut off by his servant ‘because this is the first time for a long time that she has stayed in the house for more than a few hours since Tom died and its going to be difficult for her. So while she is letting you into her home, she is going to need some support and you are going to have to be there for her. You know Gwen she wont ask for help or support, so you are going to have to do it yourself’. Arthur wasn’t stupid, he knew this would be difficult for Gwen, he had felt responsible for her father’s death, even though it was his own father who had ordered Tom to be killed. He had promised Gwen that if she ever needed anything all she had to do was ask, but typically she had gotten on with her role within the royal household, without asking for anything and keeping her feelings closed inside her. That was the person she was, so Merlin was right (for once), it was time he was there for her. ‘I know it will be difficult, but can you promise me, you won’t be a prat’ asked Merlin. Arthur thought for a moment ‘usually no, but for Gwen I promise; replied Arthur. Merlin smiled at Arthur’s answer, he was sure Arthur had said that with some feeling, but he wasn’t sure what. This weeks was going to be interesting he thought as he told Arthur he would be back later and left the Prince’s chambers.
