brianne takes on freedom of speech (due to current events)
As Americans, we consider ourselves superior for having all these freedoms listed in this wonderful Bill of Rights. We flaunt this at otehr countries and try to persuade them that our way is the way. How can we do this when we don't even allow each other these freedoms? Our school has recently been pulled into a situation involving this issue and a man named Bucky Phillips.
I believe that people are have the right to express their opinions if they choose. In fact, I enjoy hearing other's opinions even if they are in contrast to my own. However, when they pull in third parties that have nothing to do with the subject at hand, I feel it completely unecessary. This is how Sweet Home was recently pulled into the whole Bucky Phillips ordeal. Why abuse your right to freedom of speech?
The people that expressed their opinions of their "hero" Bucky Phillips were chastized the next day on WBEN. At first, I almost felt they deserved it for being ignorant. Then I realized, they were only exercising their First Amendment right which is nothing to be chastized about. As I said before, we brag about our rights as Americans, then we turn around and get angry with people that use these rights. What kind of scoiety does that to the people within it? I've never been one to question my surroundings or authority, but lately it seems that we have no other choice. Why not break the rules every so often if you're not hurting anyone? Why not question someone's authority over you when in reality they're human just as you are? Why settle for the status quo when we are capable of great things and being happy?
This entry goes far beyond freedom of speech. It is going to question the restraints on the average to below average being. The majority of Americans realize their situation in a middle class or lower life and do nothing about it. My question is why? Isn't our purpose in life to make the most of the time we have? Why not find something you love and find a way to make boatloads of money doing it? Why when we realize that it's too expensive to live in California settle for a suburb in Amherst? I say we don't settle for the position we're in unless we couldn't be happier. There's no sense in staying in a state of sadness when you can do something about it.
I suppose that's all I have to say about all of this. I was interrupted a few times during this a lost my train of thought and I'd rather not sound like an idiot and be completely off topic when I finish this.
