greetings from the land of my hermit-like cubicle, which i get to sit in all afternoon in order to watch the phones. that means the screen is MAXIMIZED WITH FULL LJ GOODNESS. awww yeahhh.
last night i got home from work and promptly started cooking dinner. i am always so eager to start dinner as soon as i get home and i think it would behoove me (yes, behoove me) to just take a breather, cuddle with Snugs, maybe watch a bit of TV before i jump into the kitchen. i am always the most stressed out at this point in the day when i should really be the most chilled out. i think it has to do with a lethal combination of hunger and anal time managment (that sounds a bit like i time manage my anus, doesn't it). i made vegtarian chili and spent the night staring at the Christmas tree as planned, and also reading an essay about "mommy lit" from that Chick Lit anthology i've been reading. i went to bed at 10 because i was exhausted. 9.5 hours of sleep on a monday night has never been accomplished before.
youngspinster requested that i talk a bit about what an average day at the office looks like for me. ever the people pleaser, here it is:
PRE-WORK:
- wake up at 7:30; 7:00 if i need to shower. am ready for work by 8:00, but i usually sit around for 20 minutes reading or watching a rerun of Home Improvement.
- leave for work at 8:30, walk 10 minutes to subway, 5 minute subway ride, 5 minute walk to office, in office by 8:50...
MORNING:
- check and respond to voicemails and emails
- turn on postage meter
- check yahoo email; check livejournal
- code invoices (go through invoices for office supplies/equipment, from Canadapost and Fedex, and from any other places that charge us for administrative stuff) and using my sweet grade 3 mathematical skills, figure out what code to use for each charge. the glamour!
- make smalltalk with favourite coworker
- at 10:30, eat granola bar. i swear, sometimes i actually stare at the clock until it turns to 10:30 because this is one of the highlights of my day
- send out information packages to anyone who has requested them from our website
- process the daily mail with our sweet, new postage meter (previously nicknamed "old blue")
- from 12:00 to 12:10, eat lunch while at desk
- from 12:10 to 1:00, read celebrity gossip blogs while intermittently doing work that boss sporadically assigns me (photocopying, making phone calls, arranging for couriers to come pick stuff up)
LUNCH:
- from 1:00 to about 1:40, read in library, then peruse Shoppers Drugmart and then buy coffee and return to the office
AFTERNOON:
- sip coffee for next 1.5 hours
- file stuff in the finance department
- assemble welcome packages
- photocopy ginormous grant applications that cause me ENDLESS GRIEF because it is difficult to photocopy 300 page documents when you share a photocopy machine with 17 other people, y'know?
- update livejournal with entry about what i ate for dinner last night, what i plan to eat for dinner tonight, and what i want to bake next.
- receive phone calls from people who are newly diagnosed with the disease my job works to fight. they are usually freaking the eff out about it (totally justified). this is the most rewarding aspect of my job because i feel a bit like a therapist. these people are so, so sick, but i think they feel better once they know that i will mail them an information package for free. everyone loves free stuff, even sick people.
- input orders/mail outs into database
- spend 4:00-5:00 refreshing Friends page repeatedly to the point of insanity
so this is what i do on an average day. are you impressed? on Fridays, it is really off the hook because on that day, i order office supplies, kitchen supplies, and do a large mail out to all of our Chapters across the country. awww yeaahhh.
