it snowed! and if you live in buffalo, it snowed A LOT. i was watching the local news through Buffalo this morning and they are calling it one of the worst snowstorms in years, because the snow is really thick and heavy (dirty) and is weighing down hydro wires causing them to crash down, so they are experiencing tons of power outages too. it is a bit insane, especially for october! that is the lake effect snow for you. damn you, lake effect snow!
the snow we had in toronto happened yesterday. i managed to drive from work to the airport sheraton without a problem, but the temperature had dropped considerably. while i was setting up the registration table in the lobby, someone said something about snow and sure enough, there it was. the first snow is best met with a cup of hot chocolate and a comfy chair in front of a window (preferably in a log cabin in Vermont with a roaring fire and a deer head over the mantle, for stereotype's sake), but instead i had to work. the hotel is actually attached to the airport, and during the opening address, the fire alarm started to go off and i was freaked that a plane had crashed into the airport (irrational? why yes.). evidently, only a pot of water had spilled in the kitchen and it set off the alarm. anti-climactic.
registration went well and the food was delish. for dessert, they had an assortment of little squares and things, but the kicker was that they had an ice cream case - y'know the kind you see at the convenience store with the drumsticks and the oreo ice cream sandwiches AND THE HAAGEN DAZ bars? - well they had one of those where you could just TAKE WHAT YOU WANTED WITHOUT PAYING. of course, i didn't notice this until after i had taken some squares, so i ditched the squares and got my haagen daz. the circle of life was finally complete. i am just pretending that one haagen dazs didn't have 24 GRAMS OF FAT in it.
there are only two of us in the office today. everyone else is at Congress. i was here first so i dropped my things off in the office and went to the washroom, which is located outside of the office in the hall. when i came back, i realized I HAD LOCKED MYSELF OUT. i am not usually the first one here, so when i opened the door with my key, i just figured it would stay unlocked. but as i later found out, i needed to flick a latch. anyway, my coworker came about 15 minutes later and all turned out find. but i was kind of worried there. the only thing i had on me was the metropass in my pocket.
i don't have to go to Congress tomorrow. woohoo! i am excited because i would have had to wake up early and take the subway and bus to the airport. and with the weather so chilly (today is the first day i am wearing my Winter coat and mitts!) and the mornings so dark, i would much rather spend the day in a semi-conscious state.
no big plans for tonight. i am making pumpkin soup for dinner with a recipe that kari sent me (i have no idea what gave her the thought that i like pumpkin). i may rent a movie or clean the apartment (yeah. that's it). it feels like the beginning of Winter, so i really just want to bury myself under a load of blankets and hibernate until May. if only that were a possibility.
