Machuca (2004) - Chile

Where, how do they cast such amazing children? Are they really adults who look 10?

This movie made me think of many others - most notably Cautiva. Children and all matters of regimes don't often go together well. But Machuca is much more than a look at Chile's turbulent history through children's eyes. It is an honest story of South American race relations, cold war, class tensions, family life, and, yes, coming of age. Children everywhere are able to be friends with each other regardless of race or status, and it is the adults' sacred duty to make them realize they are whiter or more priveleged. As someone who grew up during a regime change herself, I understand wholeheartedly the excitement of politics that become part of the usual childhood games.

Acting is amazing, the cast is beautiful, and the brief moments of blissful happiness with your friends are completely real.
