Those familiar with Todd Solondz will hardly be surprised at the chain of events in two short stories brought to life in this film. Things cannot get better - they can only get worse. But shock and gasp and laughter are not laid to rest - Solondz has an endless supply of secrets that he's scraped off our bedroom walls and bathroom floors. The motivations of his characters are all the more disturbing because they're actually quite close to home, even if we don't like to admit it.
And then there's the sex scene. The sex scene that earned the film and NC-17 rating, which, by the way, if one of two options you can view on the DVD. I recomment the NC-17 version, of course, just as the writer intended. Yes, I couldn't stop thinking about it for a week after seeing it. And like every other grating episode by Solondz, it's quite funny.
The cast features such Hollywood stars as Selma Blair, Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, and Franka Potente - which, if nothing else, serves as a redeeming choice for them.
