Many people asked me how I managed to avoid major flaws and expand the plot with each subsequent book. The reason why the details hold together so far is because I planned out the entire series before publishing my first book. In fact, the basic plot lines of the seventh book was already planned years ago. Although I remember having a panic attack when writing book 4 when I made a huge mistake and ended up adding more detail to fix the problem (which is why book 4 was longer than all the previous books). Now, I simply build each book according to the growth of the main characters, so each novel is gradually getting longer.
There is a rumour going around that the last word of the seventh book is "scar." The rumour is currently correct, but as my publishers and I continue to edit the draft, I might have to rewrite the entire final paragraph altogether. Basically, the final chapter is the epilogue, where I wrap everything up and give you details about what happens to each surviving character.
The last chapter was a way of saying to myself, "Well you will get it, you will get to book seven one day. And then you'll need this!"
Although I am writing an epilogue, I won't be writing a 'Harry Potter: Episode One'. A lot of people have asked me to write a prequel... it is all George Lucas's fault. I am sure Mr. Lucas did it for artistic reasons, but I believe that in my case, it would be unnecessary. It would be shamelessly exploitative to write a prequel, since by the time I am finished, you (the reader) will know enough.
Q: Do you think that you will write about Harry after he graduates from Hogwarts? Isn't there a University of Wizardry? A: (T)here's no University for Wizards. At the moment I'm only planning to write seven Harry Potter books. I won't say "never," but I have no plans to write an eighth book.
However, I might write another book about Harry Potter in the form of an encyclopedia about the wizarding world. It will be similar to Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and would also be written for charity.
Last rumour to to dispel: book 7 will most likely not make it on time to be released on 07/07/07. Sorry, but with the scheduled release of the 5th Harry Potter movie on July 13, 2007, book 7's release date would be pushed back to late summer of 2007.
