Cris was seated up on the walkway, watching people go by, generally lazing the day away, wishing (not for the first time, not by far) that he had a smoke right about then, when he was suddenly started almost out of his wits.
It was the briefest half-second assumption, the kind that happens when one catches something out of the corner of one's eye -- almost before you're done thinking it, you know it has to be wrong. All the same, you can't help it.
Lidia?!
His head jerked down, eyes focusing toward the wavy red hair, the slender face with full lips that had jumped at him from out of the crowd. She was even the right height. For another half-second, Cris felt his heart start to jump--
But, no. Not Lidia. For one thing, he couldn't imagine Lidia ever looking so lost, even if she had suddenly appeared in Rowan.
For another, this girl's eyes were brown.
He looked up again, and away, hoping she hadn't noticed.
Unfortunately for Cris, Ariana had been following his 'feeling' when she saw him watching her. Normally, she wasn't going to talk to the people, but he'd look up at her first.
His feeling was a little different anyone. A bit more like Reed's than most of the other people's. Maybe he was from the tree too.
Instead of looking at where he was, she just followed the same way had been, only lifting her eyes to him when she reached him. "Hello," she said simply.
Cris was more than willing to admit when he'd been caught. So he returned the look, with a little sheepish smile, and used the pause to study her a little further.
No. Definitely not Lidia. Wrong look on her face, wrong eye color, not enough freckles, the hair wasn't quite the right shade. Still... if they'd been meeting in Glass Point instead of Jhelbor, Cris would have automatically assumed she was caun. It might be a long shot -- she might not even be a tree baby -- but maybe, just maybe, she was from Willhaven.
He slid under the railing of the walkway, and used air magery to cushion his descent from the walkway to street level, where she stood.
"Afternoon, miss." He defaulted to the etiquette he'd been brought up with and did not extend his hand. You didn't shake a lady's hand unless they offered it to you first. "Sorry, but... you looked a bit lost."
"Ariana." She didn't really like being called miss. It made her feel old. And she was only seventeen. Waving a little bit up at him, Ariana just watched as he made his way down closer to her. "And I'm not lost. I'm just following."
It took her several moments to realize that she might want to clarify that. "Following something. It's like a feeling. I can tell where people are. Yours is a little different, though. Are you from the tree too?"
"I am." The rest of what she said didn't make much sense, but Cris wasn't going to assume she was mad. Lots of people here had abilities he didn't understand.
She had asked if he was from the tree 'too.' It was unclear whether she included herself in that statement, or just other worldwalkers she'd met.
He certainly wouldn't have been the first to assume that, so Ariana didn't mind. "I'm from New York City. Where are you from?" She paused, and then asked. "What's your name?"
She needed to get used to asking again. She didn't really like that.
New York... Cris thought he'd heard that name before, and if he remembered correctly, it was someplace on Earth. He felt a slight sinking of disappointment. Well, good for the Earth people, he supposed.
And, oops. He'd been so excited to find out whether she was from Willhaven, he'd forgotten to introduce himself.
"My name is Cris Gainfly," he said with a nod. "And I came here from a city called Glass Point, in a country called Lockstar, on a world called Willhaven."
He pressed his lips together. If she was manifesting abilities, she'd been here more than a week. But he couldn't remember seeing her before. She might have arrived after the battle.
"I'm sorry." He was apologizing, in general, for the fact of her arrival. Hardy anyone took it well. "It's a bit disorienting, isn't it?"
"Hello Cris. It's nice to meet you." Now she finally broke out of her otherwise lost expression and smiled at him. "Was it a nice place?" She wanted to know more about every place ever right now. Maybe that would seem more normal.
"It's alright, it's not your fault. And Reed is letting me stay with her."
Reed. Another name he couldn't put a face to, although he did remember seeing it in the journal.
"It was a nice place," he answered. Especially the part of the world he'd been in. He nodded is head to one side; an invitation to walk with him. "Have you been here long?"
Ariana fell into step alongside him, matching his pace. Exactly matching his pace. "I'm sorry you had to leave it. I've only been here a little over a week."
He smiled over at her. Caun or not, it was nice being able to smile over at someone, and not up at them.
"No need for apologies. I've been here for months now. Gotten used to it." Though apparently not so much that he didn't miss things -- or people -- from home. "Were you headed somewhere just now?"
"No, I was just practicing." Practicing following, which he hadn't asked more about so she assumed he'd understood. "You've been here a very long time, then."
"It looks that way, yes." She didn't seem to broken up about it. Cris decided against going down the overly-sympathetic route. She didn't seem to need it. "The Gate's a one-way trip, so far as anyone knows."
