Midday on Sunday, the group reaches the Tombstones, long rows of naturally rounded rocks emerging from the desert sand. The shaman announces that they're clear of the siren's curse, and for the first time, the caravan forges on ahead, not bothering with the twists and turns of their prior route.

After a couple of hours, they clear the Tombstones and go through a narrow pass in a rocky ridge. It's only wide enough for four or five horses to walk next to each other, and the walls are sheer rock on either side, heading up towards jagged mountain peaks.

In the late afternoon, the pass turns to the west, and ahead of them they find the ruined gates to an abandoned city.

The city is not as square and tomblike as Jhelbor; instead, it has a variety of buildings, crumbling stone, grass and moss and overgrown ivy.

The caravan proceeds up the main street of the city, which is eerily silent, through the empty marketplace, down to the far side of the city. There, one of the buildings has been kept in repair as a kind of fort. It has enough rooms for the worldwalkers to take individually and rest on their own.

Outside the gates of the city, on this side, there isn't desert. There's fields, farms stretching to the horizon, as far as the eye can see.

Everyone sleeps in the abandoned city of Loiol.
