He was, in fact, across the street, lingering a little in the shade of a stall. As far as he could see, their traveling party was exactly as Cherry said it would be: one woman, one blue hedgehog, one fox. Try as he might, he couldn't see any cover men. But, then, he'd had about four lessons period from Vivian ever, and they didn't really stick, sometimes.
Fine. Might as well.
He slipped through the crowd, and tapped Cherry on the shoulder. "It's me," he said. "Derek Rayne. I have a room upstairs - we should probably head on up."
Sonic took a look around as soon as they stopped in front of the place. He knew it was pointless since he had no idea what this Rayne guy looked like, but it felt like the thing to do.
Then the guy approached, and apparently had no weird reaction to seeing either Sonic or Tails. Sure, Cherry had described what they were, but reading about something and actually seeing it could be two very different things. Sonic decided he liked this guy.
He nodded at Rayne's suggestion, but since the man had addressed Cherry, Sonic waited for her to go first.
Cherry turned to look at Rayne. Well, he looked normal enough. Of course, looks could be deceiving, but there was no use in getting paranoid just yet. "Well," she said with a slight smile, "nothing like the direct approach." It wasn't every day a young man invited her up to his room.
She glanced at Sonic, nodding slightly. She had gotten the sense from Cedric's entry that they were about to receive bad, and potentially dangerous, information. "Sounds like a plan."
Rayne was, in fact, burnt out on 'weird' to the point where Sonic and Tails? Really didn't matter that much to him. He was going to run with the assumption that they were sentient beings who could talk, until proven otherwise.
He led them through the door, past the doorman - who recognized Rayne, by now, Jesus Christ - and up the stairs to the second floor.
The room itself was more of a suite, really, and much more opulently furnished than an equivalent apartment in Jhelbor.
"Cherry," he said, pointing to Cherry, like he was memorizing her name. "And who are you guys?"
"Sonic's the name," he said, raising a hand in greeting, "And this is my buddy Tails." It wouldn't have even occurred to him to introduce his friend by his 'real' name.
Cherry looked around the room curiously. "We came here to meet up with Cedric." She paused before tentatively adding, "We sort of flew the coup, metaphorically speaking, after the demon takeover." She shrugged. Maybe it wasn't so metaphorical. But who really cared right now?
She took out her journal and flipped through the pages, finding Cedric's message. "He told me to show you this," she said, holding it out to Rayne. "I'm hoping maybe you can shed some light on the crytic-ness of his message? Or at the very least tell us what you all have been up to?"
Tails had remained rather quiet throughout all of this, and he had no problems letting his friends lead for now...after all he was more or less just there for now. He actually felt a bit out of place, but listened attentively to the conversation. When Cherry pulled out her journal, he did try to lean up and watch however. This information was supposed to be for them all after all.
He shook his head, a hint exasperated. "He got arrested," he explained. "Him and Robbie caught the guy, the Gate Guardian, whatever, that everyone was looking for. They killed him, so that the Gate Guardian essence would pass from him to one of them, but it backfired, the police got called, and they didn't resist arrest."
From the tone of his voice, it's clear that he didn't really consider any of this too bad until the 'didn't resist arrest' part.
"Tribunal's set for next week," said Rayne, "and I'm reasonably sure that, given the general social tendencies of these guys, the death penalty is probably on the table."
Sonic's eyes got wider and wider as Rayne spoke. Once again, he found he had missed something. The Gate what? The essence backfired? What?
In the end, however, all that really mattered was the part about the tribunal... and the death penalty. Sonic pinched his eyes shut, probably to stop them from popping out. "Wonderful."
Cherry stood there, holding the journal out as her jaw slowly dropped. She remained stationary, caught between denial and complete shock. Either way, she was at a loss for words. Cedric? Baby faced, sweet, if not somewhat depressing, Cedric? Killed Arlen? She couldn't fathom it. It just didn't make any smegging sense.
Carefully, she cleared her throat, closing the journal and pulling it up against her chest. "Where are they being kept and can we see them?" she asked, her voice dull.
Tails was no more pleased with the news than the others and drew closer to Sonic. "Is there anything at all we can do about this?" he asked quietly. Surely there must have been something? The fox shuffled uncomfortably.
"As far as I can tell, we can speak at the fucking trial, and not much else," said Rayne. "As for visiting, sure, though bribery is probably a good way to make sure the visit isn't interrupted."
He hissed out a breath of air, and sat, heavily, on the edge of a bed. "I think Cedric should be fine. I don't know about Robbie."
Sonic tapped his foot a few times. He was almost disappointed Rayne hadn't suggested breaking them out. Then, once again, he had to remind himself this wasn't Mobius.
On the other hand: "I'm not sure what I could say. I've only talked to Cedric a couple of times, and I wasn't even here."
Cherry tucked her journal back into the oversized pocket she had sewn onto her dress. "I think our first priority will be to visit the jail. See if we can get their side of the story." She was still having a hard time believing Cedric could have killed a weed, let alone a person.
She paused, taking inventory of the crew. "Bribery to get in. Do we have anything of value?" In her own pockets were nothing but the various stones and herbs she had collected. "I have a few amethysts," she supplied weakly.
"I don't have anything but my journal," Tails said quietly. He looked at Sonic, hoping he might have some better news. Although it seemed good news was hard to come by. It seemed they would likely need to figure out something else.
"Oh, come on," said Rayne. "Get a job, earn some cash, you would not believe how easy it is. We have marketable skills like people here have never seen. I have a few thousand dremlin away in the bank already, but I just spent a ton so Jenna could bail me out. And they're not gonna tell you any more than I have, I guarantee it."

They were in trouble.
