Lately, Cassandra's uncomfortable dreams had featured the Rowan Tree more and more. She still couldn't explain all of it, and she felt half convinced that it was simply her own madness rearing its ugly head again. But whatever the reason, she was drawn back to the tree, hoping, perhaps, to find a hint of clarity ( ... )

Soosie spun around, looking for the source of the voice in a panicked whirl. For some reason part of her, despite the shouting, had kind of hoped nobody would show up. She really didn't want to be seen like this.

And of course this person was beautiful. God, she had to look such a mess. She hoped she hadn't just passed out here drunk.

Here was very green, she realized suddenly. "This...isn't New York," she murmured, followed by, "Oh God oh God oh God oh God."

On second thought, perhaps Cassandra shouldn't have come. It would have been better to let someone gentle and maternal and vaguely sweet to find the girl. She should have left her for Penny. Damn it. Quickly, Cassandra pulled out her journal and scribbled a call for help. And then, head held high, she slowly moved in.

"Calm down," she said. Of course, that was bound to work! Nothing calmed down an hysterical individual quite like telling them to do something rational! Cassandra had been around the worldwalkers too long. Setting her jaw, she did her best to keep her voice gentle. "This is not New York, but you are not in any danger. Try to relax."

Soosie whimpered, grabbing both sides of her head. "The stress finally made me lose it. Lose it, I've lost it, I've gone crazy." She groaned, tugging on her hair. "It's too late to relax. I should've relaxed before the crazy."

Unable to look her hallucination directly in the face, Soosie mumbled. "Who-- who are you? Are you real?" She looked pretty real. Now that Soosie thought of it, hallucinations probably weren't this thorough.
