Tails was outside his workshop, playing wallball by himself, by hitting the ball with his tails. Things had been going pretty busy lately so he wanted a bit of time to just be a kid before getting back to work. Besides, it was a good way to stay active.
Eventually he missed the ball though and it bounced up the street, forcing him to jog after it. When he picked it up though, he found himself in the path of someone he wasn't familiar. "Oh hello," he greeted Billy cheerfully. "Are you new here?" It was possible he wasn't, but it couldn't hurt to ask.
Billy was lost in his thoughts as usual, and because of that nearly tripped right over it, stopping just in time to spot it and it's owner. A talking fox..with two tails. Well. He was in another universe with parallel beings. Why not?
Trying to muster up the friendliest smile he could without looking too out of sorts, he nodded. "Yeah..is it that obvious?" He was sure it would be. That was of course unless someone else had met the 'other' Billy.
"Not really," Tails replied, bouncing the ball on the ground a few times. This guy wasn't staring and he appreciated it. "I just don't remember seeing you around. But more people have been popping up lately, so it was worth asking right?"
"Most people call me Tails, who are you?" He paused to study Billy more closely for a moment. "And did you come through the tree or are you a native?"
"Nice to met you too," Tails responded. And it really was in his opinion. "I came through the tree too, Back in the late fall I think. Now I run a repair shop and am working on becoming a blacksmith." He jerked a thumb in the direction he'd come from. "So how recently did you get here?"
A repair shop, good. Blacksmith, that was one step towards some sort of technology. He would have to ask the young fox more about this, but he was going to continue to be polite and answer his question first.
Billy wasn't exactly a social butterfly, but it looks as though he was going to have to come out of that shell to get the information he wanted. "Only a few days ago. I'm out trying to get a feel of the place and see how technologically far we are, and what I can do about it."
"It's pretty far from what most of us are used to in everyday life," Tails said with an awkward smile. "It's not so bad I guess though, I guess. Paper clips apparently didn't exist here until recently." He chuckled a little. "So are you any good with technology then?"
Yeah, I guessed that." Billy's face fell a little in disappointment. Paperclips just got introduced? They had a long, long way to go. "Yes. I've got a PHD in horribleness science."
"That's pretty neat. I'm not old enough for anything like that, but I like working with machines." Tails wasn't one to brag, so he was content to leave it as liking to work with technology.
A genuine smile spread to his face. "Oh, don't let that be a factor. Age has nothing to do with it. I was in the fifth grade when I was only eight." He wasn't trying to brag, not in the least. Finding someone who was young and smart like he used to be was endearing to him in the least.
"But that's very interesting Tails. Maybe you could help me?"
"I'm thirteen, but I haven't really had time for school in awhile." Too much time saving the world, and now he really had no need for school. Tails brightened at the possibility of helping someone he seemed to have something in common with. "Sure, if I can. How can I help?"
Tails gave an embarrassed smile, scuffing the ground with a shoe. "I guess so. Anyway, you can find just about any tools short of power tools here, but there's no electricity. Most of the city's light comes from candles, torches and magic."
Folding his arms Billy scratches the side of his face as he listens, taking this in. "Then what powers the tools? And, do you know why no one has tried to conduct electricity? There looks like there's plenty of people from my world who know what that is..maybe not Benjamin Franklins. But still."
He couldn't be the only one who knew anything about science here. Penny said there was magic wielders. Surely magic could do things like that.
That was a good question though so Tails had to pause to think. "Most of the people who know about electricity seem to be just average citizens. I don't think they know anything about how to generate electricity." Maybe it was worth ask Ianto about later.
To this Billy nodded. It was like he'd expected, and there was nothing wrong with that. Then again, it could be a way of life around here that he shouldn't interfere with...
But they would be so much better off if they had it. "I see. One more thing. Do you know if such a thing would be looked down on here? Considered bad?"
