For Tails, a few hours laterweedyshyguyMarch 6 2010, 04:40:48 UTC
Bret was doing his best to walk places quickly, lately. He didn't want to miss anybody, and even if it didn't make any difference at all, it was better than not trying. Jemaine probably wasn't as likely to get worried as he was, but if it were him waiting at home and Jemaine came back two weeks later than he was supposed to, well, he'd be freaking out.
So, when he passed Tails' house, he was essentially speedwalking.
By odd coincidence, Tails was on his way out the door to see Bret...and there he was. That was a huge stroke of luck so he smiled and waved. "Bret, hi," he greeted cheerfully.
Cradled in his other arm was the kitten he'd picked out for Bret.
Bret nearly tripped thanks to the sudden instinctual turn his head took at the sound of his name. Recovering from his stumble, he doubled back, waving a little as he went. "Hey." Spotting the kitten, he tried not to giggle at the thought of one fuzzy animal holding another. "Is that one of the kittens?"
"Yeah, I was just coming to visit you actually," Tails answered with a slightly awkward grin. "Were you heading anywhere important?" It would be pretty bad to have stopped him, or not, depending on their luck.
Bret shook his head. "Just heading home." It was important to him, of course, and to Jemaine, but he was pretty sure there was nothing too fatal balancing on him getting home as quickly as possible.
Or well, he really hoped so.
"So...that one's mine?" Bret asked, a gleeful grin on his face.
"Yep, I thought you might like this one," Tails said, walking over and holding it up so he could. "How about we walk you home?" he suggested cheerfully. "I was headed there too."
Bret nodded, reaching out to cautiously pat the kitten's head. When it didn't bite or scratch him, he grinned even wider. It was a really nice looking cat. Maybe if he was extra careful with him-- or her --he could keep him from hating him like Gem did.
He started leading the way home, a bit of a bounce in his step as he went. "So how've you been? Time weirdness working out okay?"
Well Bret seemed to be happier already, that was good at least. Tails rotated his tails to fly after. The kitten was cradled carefully in his arms, but not scared. He flew with all the kittens so they would be used to it.
"I don't have much to do so it's not that big of a problem," he said finally. "Meeting anyone I know when I go out is harder than it should be though. How about you? It must be harder with a roommate."
Bret looked away, though he kept Tails in his periphery. Roommate. Ha. "Yeah it's all mixed up. Me and Jemaine have been managing." It was probably inappropriate to mention that the managing involved cuddling when they slept and...other things. He was pretty sure Tails was too young for that. Unless it was different for foxes-- maybe they reached sexual maturity much younger.
That was a cat, right? Bret looked at it more critically. Yes, it was a cat. Good. That would've been weird.
To be honest, Tails didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the relationships of his friends. It wasn't something he was likely to ever have to worry about here, so it wasn't like he'd ever be able to have a two-sided conversation about it...at least that was how he felt. But he wouldn't flinch away from the idea of two guys or girls cuddling.
"It's probably the roughest on people who run businesses or have to meet a lot of people," he said after a moment. Noting Bret's check of the kitten, he flew closer and held it out. "Did you want to hold it?"
Bret nodded enthusiastically. "Yis, please." He held out his hands, a little awkward thanks to his bad experiences with Gem. He didn't want to grab for it or let it drop into his arms or something, so he hoped Tails would help him keep from making it uncomfortable.
Really, it hadn't been this complicated back home. Maybe Rowan cats were a different species altogether. One that hated him.
Bret looked a little unsure of himself, so Tails carefully passed him the kitten but didn't let go until he was sure he had it. Then he landed to walk beside him. "It likes if you cuddle it this way," he said, demonstrating with his arms.
Bret watched Tails carefully, then did his best to mimic. Aww, that felt nice. "Like this?" The kitten was rubbing against his beard and purring. Bret was pretty sure this was right. He made a happy sound, himself.
"Exactly like that." Tails smiled brightly. So far they were getting along fine so that was good. As they walked, his tails started almost wagging, completely independant of each other due to his good mood.
"It's the first time I've ever had any pets," Tails replied. "I mean there are cats and stuff like these back home but I didn't really have time for pets." Having to travel all over did sort of make things like that hard.
So, when he passed Tails' house, he was essentially speedwalking.

Except foxes ate other animals, didn't they?
But not kittens.
Bret was willing to believe that was true, even if it wasn't quite right.
