"Where'd she go?" Sonic looked around. He wouldn't have shouted when they just arrived, but he was fairly certain by now that they were alone here. He cupped his hands on either side of his mouth. "Cherry? You around?"

Cherry perked up, hearing Sonic's voice. Carefully, she picked her way across the floor, back to the little hovel's entrance. "Sonic?" she called out, hoping not to disturb the wounded elf woman. "Over here!" She was so, so, so glad to hear his voice.

Over her shoulder, she glanced at Tamber. "My friends," she told him. It was half invitation, half farewell. She'd let him take it as he wished. Carefully, she ducked through the tiny entrance and hurried in the direction of Sonic's voice. "Sonic!"

"Hey, bird girl," he greeted her with a smile as she approached. Cherry's general upbeat-ness was like a breath of fresh air. "Looks like we got a little something to discuss here."

"You bet we do," Cherry said. "You won't believe what happened in there. There was a wounded woman, and the slightly pre-pubescent elf boy asked me to heal her and I didn't think I could, but I took a cacao bean and it just kinda spoke to me and I knew what to do and I drew the poison out of her arm. I mean, it sucks that she was hurt, but the fact that I was able to do that was ridiculously shway." She paused to take a breath, noticing the dying sunlight. "Glad you found me."

"Way past cool," said Sonic, impressed. He still didn't know much about magic, and didn't imagine he ever would aside from hearing about it. It being something he couldn't do made it impressive.

He pointed in between Cordy and himself. "We found a letter in one of the last houses left mostly-standing. Gave us a bit of info on Elves and Demons and, er, mermaids." This time he was pretty sure he'd gotten the word right.

Cordelia watched the two talking. Part of her wanted to smile and tell Cherry congratulations for healing the woman. But most of her was not in the mood to be berated or ignored. So instead she stood by Mikney with her arms folded, waiting for Cherry's response.

Cherry blinked, her unending strain of words trailing off abruptly. "Mermaids are demons?" she repeated carefully, not quite certain she had heard him correctly. She glanced around at the group. "What happened, exactly? What did you learn?"

"Oh. No. Mermaids live in underwater cities. Demons are the things that the Elves are fighting against, even though there's more than two sides to the war. And Demons can look like either Elves or humans." Sonic looked to Mikney and Cordy to make sure he was getting it right. "It's confusing, but it's more than we knew before."

"Information is good," Cherry murmured. "I somehow managed to thoroughly piss off my little friend in there." She sighed. They could get into that later. "But if Demons can look like Elves or Humans...how do you tell that they're Demons? Please don't say they don't have reflections..."

"Actually, I... don't think you can?" He looked to the other two again, but since they'd seemed to become temporarily mute for the past minute, he didn't expect much of an answer. "Anyway, the real reason I called you out here is, it looks like we may be splitting up. Would you rather head back to Jhelbor or keep on truckin'?"

"I..." She frowned. The thought of going back to the village was stifling. "I don't think I'm done exploring yet. It seems like such a step backwards to return now. Especially when we're just starting to learn stuff." She glanced up at the sun again. "But I guess I'll go where you choose."

Finally, Cordelia spoke. "Fine," she said. "Then you're going to find the other group that's gone. Sonic said he's going that way. I'm heading back to the city." With that, she turned to look at Mikney. "Can we head out soon, please? I think we're done here."

The words had the faintest bitter tone.

Mikney watched the conversation without comment, and only with a hint of disappointment at Cherry's decision.

"Then I ask the same thing of you that I asked of Sonic," said Mikney. "That you do not reveal the presence of Elves in Jhelbor, nor that you reveal the opening of the Gate. If you do, everyone in that city will be in a great deal of danger. That we're alone means that there's little chance of quick reinforcements, either." He hissed out a breath. "I cannot compel your cooperation, but - please. That's all I ask of you."

All I ask of you, he said. Cherry's lips formed a thin line for a moment. Slowly, she nodded. "Okay," she said, "That's fair enough, I guess. I don't want to jeopardize anyone in the city. We all need to stick together. We're all in this situation together."

She shrugged, trying to make light of the situation. "Anyway, I'm going all mute soon enough. Not like I'll be able to tell anyone." It wasn't very funny and Cherry didn't waste much time on trying.

"Take care of yourselves," she added half-heartedly, nodding to Cordelia and Mikney. "We'll see you soon."
