*Edit, This is not spell checked or anything, do not even comment about my spelling*
One of my friends, who is really cool and a seriously talented author (if I knew how to make a link there would be a link here to justjess but sence I can't you will have to look her up), made a post earler today that got me thinking about digital-pirateing,Now those of you who know me know that I am all about supporting artists and artisens infact I am part of the start up crew for a new artist collective in portland (go to zephyruscollective.net we are still puting up the site).
My Father is a sculpter and my Mother was a author (before her stroke) and ran a mystry magizene that is now out of print. I have done (and at times even sold *gasp*) verous kinds of artisan style work, it is not something I make my living off of but it is also pretty nice stuff that I am willing to put out for sale.
I totally agree that artists (including writers) desurve recompancense for there work (I would be the last person to say other wise)and that publishing companies desurve to make a profit from there emploies work.
All that said, on the topic of digital media (spisficly books as .pdf's or reader ect) I feel that when I am being charged the same for a .PDF as I am for a print book I am being goudge. I worked for a time in the publishing industry, I know how much it costs to put a book to print (around 8 dollars printing cost for a hardback, and about 3 for a soft back when printed in quantedy more if fewer books are printed) now that is just printing costs, and there are many other costs assosated (included paying the author, and the staff, and the advertising) even so knowing as I do the costs of production, I find most books over priced at the store. That said I understand profit motive and can let it set. But when a publishing company puts out an electronic format and charges the same amount as a paper book, it pisses me off! At the very least, it should be less the cost of publishing, shipping and handling! It fucking pisses me off! I mean, I don't even have the words. So many people (like me) are blocked from accessing so many good works though lack of funds (ether personal or public like library funding) because of this... stuff!
You see I almost posted this on jess's comments, but then realised that that wasn't the right foram for this rant, it is only tangentally related to her blogpost that started me thinking about this.
I really wish there was a fair tunes style tip pot for authors you enjoy. Also, this has desided me to do something that I have thought of before. I am going to figure out how to as part of Zephyrus do a website where I will soliste writers to, post orgianle works that people can download and read for a couple of dollars and then an option to tip the author further if you like there work and want to see more.
So that is my rant.
*hugs*
