Hey all,
I know people are being asked for money for everything under the sun in a time when nobody has any to spare, but I have to ask because this is important to me. I lost three grandparents to cancer, and two friends before the age of 22. So I'm walking in the East Austin Relay for Life on April 24th in memory of them, and I'll have luminaria bearing their names on the track that night. If you've never heard of it, Relay for Life is the main fundraising event for the American Cancer Society - it involves hundreds of people getting together for 24 hours, camping together on the track while walking all night in shifts, and holding a luminaria ritual after dark for those who were lost to cancer. The luminaria ceremony is what really got me; I'm a sucker for good ritual. So I'm asking for
support for my team, even $5 if you have it, because I've worked with far too many people who can't access medical care or support and are left with wrecked lives or no lives at all. The issue hits home for me now, and I don't want to see anyone I love go through it. I certainly understand if people can't give right now, but feel free to forward it on to anyone who might be interested. You can also join us and actually do the Relay (or just come hang out for a while) if you like, or donate for a luminaria in memory of someone you yourself have lost.
I hadn't heard of this event either until this year - here's what it's all about:
