There was one night. Just one night. But she could never forget.
She had never thought of him that way. And then...she had.
Ten straight days offworld, five days on Earth of political chaos, inspection committees and jobs at stake. And then one night of downtime. Beer and pizza and team night at Daniel's place. As if they hadn't all seen enough of one another to last a lifetime; they chose to spend their free night together.
DVDs and beer and cards and good conversation. Jack drove Teal'c back to the base. Carter and Daniel lingered in the backyard in the warm spring air, soft music wafting through the screen door from the living room. Sam slipped out of her shoes and walked into the grass, letting the evening dew cool her bare toes. The gentle wind brushed her skirt against her legs. Too many beers, the ground was a little uneven beneath her feet. Then she had her head back, staring up at the stars. It seemed her whole life she had been staring at the stars. Once they had represented the most impossible dreams. Then they had been a real goal. Then they had lost their magic in fear and darkness. Then they had grown beautiful again. But they hadn't been dreams anymore.
Daniel's hand settled on her hip before she realized he had joined her on the grass. The music seemed louder. She didn't know if he had turned up the volume or if she was imagining things. But the melody was soft and kind of like the warm wind and the sparkle of the stars. He smiled and his sweater felt familiar beneath her fingers.
They danced. Swaying back and forth in the grass and listening to the music. Neither of them could truly dance, but it didn't matter.
Something in his eyes said, "You're beautiful." And Samantha Carter hadn't heard those words in sincerity in so long she had almost forgotten how to believe. Her fingers twined with Daniel's, and she met his brilliant eyes in the starlight.
His hands settled at the small of her back and she didn't know when she decided to rest her head on his shoulder. She knew when it started to feel like the safest place in the world.
The wind played with her hair, and she remembered some distant time when her hair had fallen across her shoulders and she had loved the elegance and fluidity and wanted to braid ribbons into her golden locks and spin until her skirt lifted and swirled in the summer air.
For a moment there was no intergalactic danger. There were no ever-present demands for naquadria. There were no regs and no ranks and there was no need for Major Carter to invent something out of nothing and save the planet.
There was starlight and cool grass and the strong warm body holding her close and gentling the tension from her back. He smelled of the dizzying, spicy brand of expensive cologne that had once meant first dates and teases and tastes of boys becoming men and creating sensations on her skin that made her ache for more and wonder about the adventures ahead.
They kept dancing. The music ended and they stood listening to the wind and the whispers of the night and resting in one another's arms.
For a moment Samantha Carter felt beautiful.
They never spoke of the night.
But she could never forget.
And the stars shone like dreams.
