This is great, Rowan. Excellent! I always wondered how things played out between them when he left, and this feels true. The *only* thing I didn't absolutely love was when Jack talked a *lot* there at the end. He had two whole paragraphs where he just talked and talked and said things like "how much I love you". That took me out of the reality of it a teensy tiny bit, only because it didn't feel quite as *Jack* as the rest of his dialogue. I don't think he would talk that much. :P
(But to be fair, it seems like Jack would be VERY difficult to write. Much harder than any other SG character, maybe harder than *any* character. I did a drabble meme once and got stuck trying to write a 100-word drabble with some Jack dialogue -- actually, I think you might've requested it, ha ha -- and it took me FOREVER, and I know it sucked a lot when I finally finished.)
But the rest of it? Awesome. I love when Sam is vulnerable, and I love your present-tense style of writing. And Vala! Oh, Rowan, that tiny little description of her checking on Sam in the bathroom was perfect -- I could see it perfectly -- and I absolutely DEMAND that you write a Vala fic someday. I know she's not your favorite character or anything, and she doesn't feature prominently in any of your preferred pairings, but I think you hit that nail right on the head, and you should definitely do it again. :P
Bravo!

It's the one where Colonel Emerson was executed in front of Carter. Where they were all being held hostage on the ship.

I can definitely see your point, and that's always a debatable aspect of his character. It's my belief that he is capable of this kind of speech when it really matters. That he surprises you sometimes, we just rarely get to see that side of him. (He's probably now used up his words for the month:)) What we've seen of his relationship with Sara leads me to believe there are a lot of sides to him we don't normally get to see. I really think a lot of the quietness came after he lost Charlie, and that as he finds his way again and finally really opens up to someone in an actual relationship again, we'll see sparks of that former man. He does have the ability to rant/babble about things when he thinks it matters (like as an old man in "Brief Candle" or discussing things in "Matter of Time" or "The Gamekeeper" or even "The Abyss"). He talks a fair amount when he's talking Daniel down off something, and I think he'd be the same with Carter once they were really in a relationship.
But that's ENTIRELY my take, and you're fully entitled to yours.:)

Ummm...sorry about that.*g* But I remember that it did NOT suck!:D

Hee, thanks.:) That was actually one of my favorite scenes. I do love Vala, and I have some half-written Daniel/Vala fics around. I adore the Sam/Vala friendship and have toyed with that a bit, too. Glad you liked my take on it.:)
Thanks for the feed!
