Counting Blackbirds

Every day we become less aware of the world directly outside our house. News bulletins from the BBC, NPR public radio on your mp3 player. We see the world only through the eyes of an anonymous reporter 3000 miles away, the dim light outside barely illuminating the black ice covering our sidewalk. 20 dead in Jordan yesterday is slightly more frightening than 11 dead in Guyana today, but not nearly as terrible as 3 dead on the road three blocks away. It's what winter does, you say, and it happens every year. Better to hold tight to each other and pretend that the world only starts to exist wherever we don't.

(Maybe I need a new subject. I dunno)
