Hello all from the land of Och aye!!!
I have not been online as much as I had hoped Because only now, a week in, do i finally have my internet at home working, and its still a little tempremental. There is school internet of course, but the main campus is a 20minute walk up and down some hills from here. Its a neglegable distance for normal daily stuff, but the times i normally write are when i'm in my pj's hanging in my room and processing the day. Admist my end of the day leisure, getting on boots and coat and trecking around a loch and over some hills onto campus is less that apealing. Any who, i'll now stop explainig why I havn't been online and start actually taking advantage of my internet connection.
So.....The flight over was pretty incident free. After my last fond farewells I got dropped off at the airport, almost late but not quite (thank goodness) The flight from buffalo left almost on time, and after a 2 hour lay over, the plane from philidelphia left exactly on time suprisingly enough. I got on the plane at 9pm, and 6 hours later I was enjoying the 9am morning rush at Glasgow international airport (my internal clock was not amused). The international customs were lovely people at brighly colored counters. The man checking me through spent more time asking about my studies and wishing me luck than asking pointed questions about my intentions in their fair country. Basiclly, the best air port security check ever.
Upon arival at my school flat, past a loch, a golf course, and a castle, i imediatly colapsed and napped for 2 hours. Durring this time my flat mate brian, and his mate brian, came in and thinking the flat deserted, ran around investigating with child like exuberance and curiosity. In the back of my mind i figured I should have gotten up and introduced myeself, but my internal clock disagreed. After things quieted down a bit I finally got up and opened the curtains. Brain and Brian were aparently down stairs investigating the outside of the flat and almost shit themselves when they saw the blinds move in the suposidly empty flat they had just left. They ran upstais and pounded on the doors to see which one contained the elusive curtain mover. After i called "just a sec" and spent far more than a sec geting presentable their bated breath was met with a bleary eyed, blue hared American. And thats how I met my first flat mate.
(to be continued after dinner)
I just ate my invention (bastard beer chilly) and it was a great sucess with my flatmates, American and Scotish alike. Huzzah for me ^_^.
Any way, back to my update. This first week has been good but with nothing super specific to report. I have pretty much just settled in, gotten to know the campus and my class schedule. Also gone through multiple heart breaking bouts of watching american dollars convert into pounds (i feel extra poor here). BUt things have worked out. the week went on with the red tape of settling in clearing up and I have spent many a night hanging out with Brain and our other flat mate (his girl firend Laura). They are wonderful and such fun. Rich away we all clicked and have a little community feel in the apt. Since meeting them i stopped going to the over contrived tours and meet and greets for the international students. Instead I've done stuff like go grocery shopping in town with them or sitting at home drinking and laughing our asses off. We also went on two quests to the elusive poster man and now our flat looks less like an asortment of crudley attached shipping crates and more like a home.
The only thing of extraordinary note so far occure don my third day here. Totally unlooked for I found a huge package at the porter's desk waiting for me. It was quite light and had no return adress on it. It turned out to be the most gorgeous boquet of roses I'd ever seen with a sweet card. I knew it had to be from patrick, and the roses sit now in my little shipping crate, looking ever so elegant. That sweet and grand jesture helped put pep and enthusiasim back into my life as i was dealing with all the drudgery of settling in and sroting out things like my schedule and my internet and settingup a bank account.
So this week summed up nicely. I only had one class today. After class I met laura and brian and went and signed up for gym memberships. Having signed up for the gym made Brian and I feel completley intitled to promptly go home and clog our arteries with cheese and beans on toast while watching NCIS. After that Laura Brian and I hung out, clenaed the kitchen, put up posters, talked to the porter, and now we are all just chilling out.
So, nothing monumental in my adventures yet (well except for the huge fallace that is the wallace monument which looks over the campus ever so ominously.....also stirling castle.....also Airthery Castle on Campus) I did take some pictures on my trip and around campus. You guys can find them on f'book, but I'll give you a little preview here.
Much Love all around, and I will try to have more exciting things to write about next time.
