Hello all,
I have decided to try and post less rambly posts more often. This will keep you informed in less detail, but it means i will post more often. This also means it leaves me some things to ramble about when i get home. Shorter posts means less photos, but as always i encourage you to check out
my Flikr where most of my pictures to date are posted. (if things go well tonight, all my pictures so far will be posted)
so, on to my adventures...
LONDON:
I went to London for 2 nights and 2 days (march 6-8). This was a U of I organized shin dig in an attempt to get all the study abroad students to hang out and meet each other. I didn't go to the one they had last semester because i didn't want to go all the way to London to hang out with Americans from my university back home and be ushered around like so much cattle. However, this semester I knew my friends Ben was going and there was the Darwin exhibit on in the Natural History museum, so i decided it would be well worth the trip considering the company and free room and board.
The first night ben and I hung out with some other people, had a lot of fun and such...but not much to report.
The first day we walked around like so much cattle, but we got see interesting things, and the weather was gorgeous. In the afternoon we were released to be free range students. Me, ben, a lovely lassie by the name of Janet and other lady i can't recall the same of (sorry lovely lady where ever you are) broke off on our own to experience London.
Ben and a local
"Whats that you say tiny badger?...Burn them?...Burn them all?"
We ate at a street market where we ate amazing falafel and found a mountain of brownies...
We then explored Southwark Cathedral
sadly no pictures allowed inside....but it was gorgeous
though under construction
We then made our way towards St. Peter's cathedral. On the way we saw a ...
HOLY SHIP! (now my new favourite expletive)
This ship is on the spire of St. Nicolas church
We finally made it to St Paul's cathedral....it was too expensive to go inside, but we got good pics from the outside...it was gorgeous.
Most importantly i got to fulfil one of my major goals for visiting the UK...
"Feed the birds, tupence a bag..."
"...tupence, tupence, tupence a bag."
That's right...i got to be that old bird woman in marry poppins for 20 minutes of my life!
Then Ben and I went off on our own to see the tower of London (yay bloody history)
They say if the Ravens ever leave the tower of London, England will fall
Medieval Yoga
That evening the whole group saw a play that was like a gritty, urban Cirque du Soleil.
The next day Ben and I went with our friend Janet to the British National museum (yay history)
Then Ben and I went the Natural history museum where i was destined to see the Darwin exhibit...
...or so i though...
...it was "sold out" (though i don't know how one sells out a museum exibit first thing in the morning)...
...i was very sad...
But i consoled myself with the other wonders of the museum like...
Really big tree cross sections!...
(thats a 1,600 year old sequoia cross section)
really big foetuses!....
(i was actually very inpressed with how straight forward the sexual/ reproductive health and biology section was) For example...
I approve of the unabashed informative nature of their approach...one not always seen in the states.
It was here I took time to preach at the little known church of the Holy Moose (well actually prehistoric deer)...
And I found the first public drinking fountain I've seen during my time in the UK......no joke...
Magnetic rocks were also purchased which i helped console my self with by creating cafe sculptures...
REPO! The Genetic Opera:
On the 11th or March Brian and I went to see REPO! The Genetic Opera at the Edinburgh film house. We had so much fun, and we got to meet the director and the man who plays "Grave robber" in the film and was the script writer. We go to chat before and after the screening, and we talked about film and theatre and had loads of fun, we even created and inside joke, and the director told me to friend him on face book (which means we're like best friends right?)...and it was pretty much amazing!....Sadly I forgot my camera...so you will just have to wait for me to come home and make pretty word pictures.
FLAT SHENANIGANS:
So life around the flat had been pretty standard with a few exceptions...
One was the great mould extrication of ought nine. We basically cleaned up the kitchen and found loads of thriving mould colonies. So i pulled on my goggles, gloves, and lab coat, and came to rescue with tweezers and bleach, much to the relief of my flat mates.
Another exception... one evening i planned to make chocolate ship cookies, my flat mate Brian planned to make chicken curry, and Ryo and Yutah planned to make salmon sushi. In short, we feasted...
The sushi is presented!
...and it was so delicious....and then we watched Marry Poppins…and when the bird lady scene part I got point and shouts “ I was there…and I fed those birds…well not those birds…but birds like them!”….yay ^_^.
Also, the weather has been ridiculously gorgeous and sunny for March...
(a picture of Airthery castle on my way back home)
So yeah…that’s all for now…TTFN!
