It was one thing when Hayate inherited his debt from his parents back home, but it's another entirely when he is the direct cause for him losing all his money on the Johto front. It was actually kind of depressing, but it's not like he was going to dwell on it. He already had Cocona letting him stay at her place, so not having to bum it out in the wilds was more than enough to be thankful for.
... but then he ran into Mammon, who somehow using her no doubt psychic Greed senses could tell he was flat broke. So she decided it was a wonderful idea to drag him down to land down under (Goldenrod) and run the shop gauntlet.
