Aya couldn't help but watch the flying type's antics. It must have been a bother for Mamoru but to be honest Aya mostly just found it amusing. With preparations for Dinner finished she was free to see if she could help, though. She picked up her egg and moved to do just that. Since Riolu almost hatched without her notice she didn't intend on chancing that with this one.

Sneasel, always out of her ball, was right beside Aya, watching Togepi with some amusement. They weren't friendly creatures but Aya's Sneasel at least considered their travel companions to be part of her pack, so worth protecting just as much as picking on.

"You know, it's usually not a good idea to try getting between a mother and her kids."

The statement, in and of itself, was not something Mamoru would have ever contested. Most certainly, it was accurate that mothers were protective of their offspring. There was just one problem with that logic here. And Mamoru, try as he might, could not make sense of the gap.

"She isn't their mother. She's only a month old herself... Why is she so attached to those eggs?"

"It's probably instinct. Even little girls emulate mother figures when they play with dolls. I know I did." She smiles and stoops down next to him to watch her. "It's natural for us to want to look after little ones, even if they aren't our own, especially if they don't have a mother figure of their own already. That's what I think anyway."

Sneasel wasn't exactly following any given cue, but picked up Togepi to help it try to reach the snack while the two trainers were talking.

Instinct. Aya was probably right; Skarmory was, in essence, a bird. Birds sat on eggs, and did so without ever needing to be told or shown how ( ... )

It shouldn't be legal for a Pokemon to be that cute jsyk junebugfuji May 6 2011, 08:54:59 UTC
That was good enough for Sneasel, who set Togepi down once it had it's food, though surprised that he offered her some. "Snea?"

She didn't hesitate long, accepting the piece with a happy "Sneasel!" in return. She'd remember that!

Aya watched the two with a soft giggle, glad they were getting along. She'd been worried when she found out Sneasel were... well, when she'd read up on the species, but she also figured she had one for a reason. She puts a hand over her mouth and stifles her laughter at poor Togepi though.

"Can't really argue with that logic, sorry Togepi." She smiled, but she was interrupted by a familiar white glowing coming from her arms. It looked like her diligence was going to pay off this time!

Mamoru's attention quickly turned to the egg Aya was carrying. His Skarmory, too, was craning its neck in an effort to see better. Even Togepi paused from his eating and dread of the "workout" in his near future to watch.

Aya set the egg down, watching as the glow intensified until finally, just like when Kenji hatched, a little black puppy sat amidst the mess of shells. It had a large piece on top of it's head still, covering it's eyes. Aya just grinned, reaching out to take the piece off. "Another puppy!"

Sneasel seemed torn on this matter, being a feline herself, but pack mates were pack mates.

"I wonder what type you are? Welcome to the team!"

The puppy let out a soft growl, not threatening, and looked up at her new trainer and then Mamoru, and finally back again. Aya let the newly hatched Pokemon sniff at her hand while her free one reached for her Pokegear.

Aya had a good system for letting eggs hatch that Mamoru would be sure to use himself from now on. He blamed half of his Skarmory's attitude problem on her first impression of him, which had the misfortune of being him on his back underneath her weight.

He didn't try to get any closer to the Houndour, though the piece of shell on its head was an endearing sight. Better for it to be clear which of them it was partnered to.

Togepi had no such forethought. He simply had to investigate this new addition. Immediately.

"Toge toge!"

Walking right up to the Houndour, Togepi stared up, blinked, and with an open-mouthed smile offered her the remainder of the Poké Snack.

"A dark-fire dual type, how about that? My first fire type! You'll make a great compliment to Saki, I think I'll call youuuu... Yuki! I'm sure you'll live up to it!"

Yuki barked his name in approval, rising up on his hind paws to brace, front paws against her chest to lick her face. Aya laughed and rubbed the top of his head.

"Okay, Yuki! I already had a bath!"

Yuki didn't need a lot of convincing, turning to Togepi cheerfully and licked him before taking the remainder of the snack.

"Looks like they made fast friends." The trainer smiled.

Mamoru was glad now that he'd kept off to the side and a safe distance from that tongue. Ugh ( ... )

Aya finally got Yuki to calm down, wiping her face with the back of her sleeve. She came out drier than Togepi, but still. Energetic little guy, wasn't he?

Aya observed the unfolding scenario with curiosity. She didn't quite get it herself until Togepi turned to her. Since her hands were free at the moment she picked up the little Pokemon and gave him a smile.

"Hmm, is this about Yuki getting a nickname?"

Aya was this little Pokémon's new best friend.

Of course Mamoru would always be his partner (of this he was certain), but oh what a wonderful thing it was to be understood!

"Toge toge!" And just for good measure, he beamed and nodded. Then began to chitter and point to himself.

Aya gave a light-hearted giggle, settling Togepi in her lap so that he was facing Mamoru again.

"Your partner is feeling a bit left out, Mamoru-kun. I think he wants a nickname."

Mamoru blinked slowly. "A nickname...?"

That certainly seemed to be the case. Togepi was responding affirmatively to her guesses. Mamoru thought she should probably consider becoming a translator for Pokémon; she seemed to have a gift for understanding them.

But for Togepi... that could be difficult. Once upon a time, Mamoru had considered naming his Pokémon. Then he'd realized he simply wasn't very good at choosing Pokémon names and abandoned the prospect.

Clearly, his Pokémon hadn't followed suit. He looked down, avoiding both Aya's and his Togepi's gaze.

"I don't know what to choose."

"I think what's important is that you put some thought into it. I think if you do that he'll be happy with almost anything you pick."

She settled Togepi back in his Trainer's hold with a soft smile and gaze, making sure Mamoru had a good hold on Togepi before letting go by covering one of his hands with hers.

"Ganbatte kudasai!"

The warmth of her hands atop his own startled Mamoru. He blinked, for a moment equal parts surprised, confused, and uncertain. What did that mean? How did he respond? More than simply touch, contact between hands was surprisingly intimate, even for a gesture as innocent as seeing his hold on Togepi was secured. The last person to cover his hand like that... it was best not to dwell on that. A dangerous association it was.

The seconds passed without any reaction from Mamoru. Finally, he could only drop his gaze down and to one side, his expression almost guilty.

"Yeah."
