wardrobe inventory

So, one perennial complaint of mine is that I have too many clothes. I finally decided to see exactly what I have. I used this blog post as a guide: http://www.smilesgowitheverything.com/tag/wardrobe-inventory/ and also added some categories of my own.

Here is what I've got:

Graphic Ts - 11 (4 I actually wear, and 7 that are concert Ts and stuff that I don't wear as often)
Plain Ts - 14 (5 decent enough to wear as layering pieces to work)
Work tops summer - 2 3/4 sleeve button shirts, 1 shell
Work tops winter - 4 (button shirts)
Long sleeve Ts - 13 (which is an egregious number, but in my defense 7 of them were okay to wear to work at the law office)
Wear alone tank tops - 6
Camisoles/layering tanks - 16 (yes. SIXTEEN.)
Undershirts - 10 (not quite nice enough to wear as a visible layer but are okay under aforementioned long sleeve t shirts)
(for those counting along at home, yes, you are correct, I have thirty-two sleeveless shirts.)
Short sleeve cardigans - 2 work, 5 casual (two of which I used to wear to work but now they are sort of janky but I like them and have a hard time getting rid of them, especially the pink 3/4 sleeve cardigan I am 100% positive I bought at the Holyoke Mall Target in college)
Long sleeve cardigans - 6 (plus one that I like the color but need to admit is falling apart)
Short sleeve sweaters/shells - 7 (plus two that have a small hole in the front and I am in denial that I should get rid of them)
Long Sleeve Sweaters - 3. Yes, only three sweaters! I also have one handknit sweater and one handknit vest.
Jeans - 3. Again, kind of hard to believe I only have three pairs of jeans given that I have THIRTY TWO TANK TOPS.
Cropped pants/Capris - 2 casual (1 denim and 1 khaki) and 2 work appropriate
Shorts - 6 (2 denim, 2 cut offs, 2 chino)
Skirts - 3 work, 3 casual, 1 semi fancy
Dresses - 20
1 maxi
3 3/4 length evening dresses (2 old bridesmaid dresses, 1 velvet)
1 old prom dress that I promise I will donate in the spring
1 formal gown
5 wear-to-wedding dresses (you feel me, other ladies in your 20s?)
2 body con dresses (aka they are designed to be tight and I wouldn't necessarily wear them to a wedding)
2 casual dresses (1 summer, 1 winter)
1 swimsuit coverup
1 wedding dress (not that I will wear it again but it does take up closet space).
1 dress I ordered online and haven't worn because I don't really have a place to wear a full-skirted 1950s style halter dress and I really need to take it to a consignment shop
1 dress from salvation army I wore as a 50s housewife halloween costume
1 dress from Laurel Parade that I got from Forever 21 and really, I am not a teenager anymore so I can't really wear it, but do you honestly expect me to get rid of my Laurel Parade dress?
Work Pants - 7
Work Jackets - 2 short sleeve, 3 long sleeve

So when it comes right down to it, it is not that I have too many clothes. 3 pairs of jeans is not unreasonable. My dedicated work wardrobe isn't outrageous. It's just that I have a LOT of t-shirts and tank tops which makes it feel like I've got so much. I think that is a result of the way I shop - which is rarely "I need this item, let me go find it" and more often "Ooooh, this is on sale!" T shirts and tank tops are often on sale. That also means I'm often not buying to replace so I'm constantly just adding without getting rid of the older items. Even when I do buy to replace I sometimes hang on to the old thing! Which is silly. But I'm working on it.

At least now I have a much better sense of what I have and what I may need to supplement - especially in my work wardrobe.
