Sometimes, the thought of leaving home, even just for a few weeks was terrifying to Kyo. And then, sometimes, the thought of leaving that somebody who initiated the initial thought in the first place was terrifying to Kyo. Absence is said to make the heart grow fonder, but Kyo was afraid that absence will only make him fall out of love. He could only love something, have something as long as it was right there with hm.

Kyo sat down, and his whole body felt heavy. Ruki didn't twitch, his eyes didn't divert from the book in his lap, and perhaps it was better that way, because Kyo didn't want to hear the judgment, nor the loneliness in Ruki's voice. Words were their lifelines, actions were their definitions. Kyo placed his hand on Ruki's; a tattoo on pale silk, and Ruki felt something within him crack. His heart, his sanity, anything which possessed some shred of emotion.

"We're such fools, you know. Letting the most trivial things get to us," he said, but his eyes were still focused upon the words on the paper.

"You are afraid," said O'Brien, watching his face, "that in an another moment something is going to break. Your especial fear is that it will be your backbone. You have a vivid mental picture of the vertebrae snapping apart and the spinal fluid dripping out of them."
They were not afraid of something breaking, nor were they afraid of death. They were only afraid of losing their grip on the fake reality in which they lived in. Afraid of losing that essence under which they flourished, little doodles of every day life and words with imaginary meanings scribbled on tissues and scrap pieces of paper.

What meaning did it have, in the end? Their fake reality didn't breathe the air into their lungs, it didn't pump the blood through their arteries and veins. It was their escapism, and when their lips met, it was the climax of thoughts which would take a lifetime to decipher.

(I like it rough because baby, when you make me scream, it's for the both of us)
"It's the little things about you that I'll miss the most," Kyo said; Ruki tore his eyes away from his book. With a soft flick of the wrist, the book was on the floor. Words, no matter how substantial and prophetic will always be rendered meaningless by the present, because humanity cannot face the thought of being wrong. He pressed his lips against Kyo's, hoping that he would be able to prove to himself that distance was just a number, that days would pass with a blink of the eye.

Kyo left in the morning, his tattoos were shadows on Ruki's skin.
