What are your favourite and least favourite words? Any reasons why?
Well, no I dont really have writer's block. But I figured I would answer the question anyways. Because well, it, words, fascinate me.
I am going to use George Carlin's own words to describe what I mean:
"I love words. I thank you for hearing my words. ... They're my work, they're my play, they're my passion. Words are all we have really."
One of my favorite words is a curse word. And anyone who knows me knows which one it is. Yes, Yes. I love dropping the
F-bomb. It's so
versatile and
useful.
You can fuck. Or be fucked. Both in the sexual way and in the screwing over way. There's the descriptives uses. He's such a fucker is a popular one with me by far.
Fuck is even a huge part of Supreme Court's rulings on Obscenity and indecency (1st Amendment stuff) George Carlin's famous comic
routine was the subject of
this case in which the Supreme Court handed down its famous rulings on what obscene and indecent mean. And this case indeed decided how puritanical (why would we WANT to be like the puritans, really?) and ashamed we Americans (well, I am obviously not ashamed) are of sex and sexual practices. We as telecommunications majors study indecency and obscenity in huge amount of detail because once having stepped over the line we get fined immensely.
Except in the case of Bono. He didn't have any action taken against him, nor the channel/program which he was on which he said fuck. Here's why (from wikipedia, but this is actually an accurate statement. I have heard it so many times in my own classes):
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission fines stations for the broadcast of "indecent language", but in 2003 the agency's enforcement bureau ruled that the airing of the statement "This is really, really fucking brilliant!" by U2 member Bono after receiving a Golden Globe Award was neither obscene nor indecent. As U.S. broadcast indecency regulation only extends to depictions or descriptions of sexual or excretory functions, Bono's use of the word as a mere
intensifier was not covered.
As for my least favorite words, meh, I really dont like the word "swipe". the "sw" and the "ipe" together are like fingernails on a chalkboard. other than that, I dont have anyother words I dont like. They all have their uses.
I fight with my boyfriend, who is a musician, about words. As a musician he tends to believe that music make the song. I tend to go with words. I think we are both correct, but the lyrics in songs are what get my noodle goin, are what makes me like a song. That make me say "God I have to have that song in my iTunes". The tune can suck, but the words strung in such a way can really turn me on in ways unimaginable. (and I'm not talking about sexually turning on. ) Because I read along; and I feel what they are saying because. Some really great songs with lyrics and music that I enjoy and I think others should have in their iTunes as well: Most of Portishead's 2nd album (self-titled), Death Cab's
I Will Follow You Into The Dark, The Beattles, Cream, All Along The Watch Tower, Coldplay's Dont Panic, The Shins, and of course Nirvana.
Oh and Being at WCJB right now, these opening lyrics from Say Anything's Wow I can get sexual too are the epitome of how I feel right now.
If I die and go to hell real soon,
it will appear to me as this room.
