“LiHong! Over here!”
Luhan looked up from the soccer ball towards the source of the voice. Xiumin was breaking away from the blah towards his right. His eyes shifted quickly to the defenseman running towards him and he had to quickly weigh his options. Luhan did a drag and scissor with the ball to fake out the defense and dribbled the ball a few more yards before he saw an opportunity and took a shot towards the goal.
Tweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
The whistle blew and pretty soon his teammates were on him, tackling him with hugs and congratulatory pats.
“LiHong! You did it!”
“Good job!”
“Fuck yeah! We’re celebrating tonight!”
Luhan laughed brightly and enjoyed the sweaty embrace of his friends. Kris had lifted him up in a tight hug.
“I’m buying tonight. Anything you want!”
Luhan.
The voice was soft but rang out clearly even amidst the celebrations going on around him. Luhan’s head snapped towards the direction of the noise automatically and his eyes met with familiar heavy-lidded opal ones. He stood under the shade of a nearby tree in a casual, black fitted tee with hands in the pockets of his dark jeans. His tanned skin seemed to belong under the bright sun yet his hooded eyes were a perfect contrast to the sun’s gentle rays. Kai. Kai turned slowly and disappeared behind the tree.
“Lihong! Hey, come on! Let’s go!”
Luhan returned his focus onto his teammates who were dragging him towards the locker room. “Coming!”

Luhan padded barefoot into the dark kitchen in a simple white shirt and boxers that he pulled on after his shower. It was already past 12am and although he had just eaten with his team, his fast metabolism wasn’t about to let him sleep without having a snack first. He opened the fridge, illuminating the kitchen, and scanned its shelves while trying to dry his still-wet hair from the shower with a towel. Taking the carton of milk from the fridge, he took a big gulp before he noticed that the door to Kai’s room was ajar. After putting back the milk, he padded quietly towards the door and nudged it open slowly, careful not to make too much noise. The bed was empty but the sheets were rumpled: it had definitely been slept in. Luhan slipped into the room slowly and took a few cautious steps toward the bed. The room smelled of musky cedarwood. It was so distinctly him. So distinctly Kai.

“Well, are you just here to stare?”
Luhan jumped slightly.
“Kai.” Luhan breathed. And there the said person was, against the door from where Luhan had entered, slouched against the wall.
“Tomorrow.” His deep voice was soft in the silence of the night yet it was booming to Luhan’s eardrums. “We’re leaving.”

Luhan turned his gaze downwards toward his feet. They were going to play the qualifying game next week against the rival school. He hated this part the most. The running. But somehow, it was the only thing real in his life. Kai was like a shadow. He was always there. Luhan could sense him. He always looked over him. A ‘protector’, Kai once said. Yet he was so absent from Luhan’s life.

“And I told you not to keep all the junk. It just makes the process longer.”
Luhan nodded and walked back towards the door. He paused by the door frame and lifted his gaze up to meet Kai’s. He had always thought that the eyes were a portal to the soul. Kai’s were cloudy. Cloudy, dark, and deeper than anything he had seen his entire life. And he was completely enraptured by them.

He didn’t notice how he was now a mere breath away from Kai. Kai's rich obsidian orbs observed his own with slight amusement. Luhan could feel his warm breath ghost over his face and he was tempted. It was oh so tempting. Tempting but at the same time, frightening. He trembled but couldn’t help but lean in. Just before their lips met, Luhan felt his back connect with the wall hard and felt the breath knocked out of him. He locked eyes with Kai again briefly for a second before hungry lips collided with equal force. Dark, rough hands met the milky smooth expanse of Luhan’s stomach. They moved downwards and grabbed his wrists, pinning them with one hand above his head. Kai pulled back for a moment and nodded towards the door. Luhan traced his line of sight to the door and the door shut soundly. He soon found himself on the bed with Kai joining him.

A little town on the tip of South Korea off of the Korea strait was where they settled next. So small, so negligible in fact that Luhan didn’t bother asking for the name of it when they first arrived. What was the point anyways? They were probably going to leave as soon as Kai said the words again. The sky was constantly covered by rain clouds. The wind was annoyingly persistent. It was heavy, humid and always present. He missed the sunshine in Vancouver, even if they had been there only briefly. He may have even liked the dark and frigid climate of Moscow better. He hated the breeze that constantly threw his hair in every direction.

Kim Jong Hyun. That was his new identity here. Very typical name, could be anyone. Patterned after his own, Kai had said. Kim Jong In. Luhan enrolled in the local high school to prevent himself from going stir crazy at their new temporary house. Kai had suggested staying in the house to be safe but he decided that he wouldn’t have that. He needed to get out.

They will find you and kill you. I have a duty to protect you.
I know how to keep a low profile!
Luhan.
I’ve been doing it my whole life. I know how to get around. Plus, it’s the best chance we have at finding the other Garde survivors right?

Luhan didn’t want to mention the boy he had met as part of the reason why he wanted to enroll at the school. Oh Sehun, he said his name was. He had clear brown eyes, soft chocolate locks, and an irresistible laugh that sounded like wind chimes on a warm, sunny day. Luhan knew better than to get attached to anyone but somehow, the boy had crept into his heart from the first time he introduced himself with a lisp. It might have been the way he called him ‘hyung’. It might have been the way the boy took him by the hand and pulled him along to his crazy adventures in the mountains. Or how wide his back is or how welcoming his arms were. Luhan thought he was crazy for thinking about this boy but for some reason he couldn’t get out of his head.
Remember, Kai had once said.
One day they will come for you.

Luhan honestly didn’t think that the ‘one day’ would have happened soon afterwards in that particular town. It happened so suddenly. There was fire. It was red, bright red and uncontrollable. Luhan had tried to fight them but there were so many. There were so many. Suddenly, there was wind. And a lot of darkness in the dreary afternoon. He thought he was going to die. A bright streak of red came rushing at him and he had closed his eyes. Once, he may have been okay with ending this life of constant running. Today though, he knew he wanted to live. He had something to live for. This was why he was scared to die and squeezed his eyes shut tight. Instead of scorching pain, there was silence. He felt slight pressure on his lips but they were quick and transient. Gone as soon as it had appeared. It was way too familiar but fleeting, just the way he had known it his whole life. When he opened his eyes, he saw the dark orbs one more time before darkness swallowed the chaos around him. And with that, everything was gone. Just like that. The field around him was burnt and still smoking in some areas but there were no more chimeras, no more Mogadorians. It was just him alone on the field. Him and the wind. Where was Kai? No, Luhan knew the answer to that question.

“Luhan!”
Luhan felt arms around him. And he knew. He didn’t have to keep running anymore. No more searching either. He had found the one he really needed and he was going to be all right. Maybe one day he’ll have to walk in the shadows again. He never would have thought, however, that the wind could feel so solid. Having nothing to grasp onto his whole life, he knew he had found something real as Sehun tilted down to crash their lips together. He could learn to love the wind.
