Cut to:
EXT. NIGHT. THE VAULT.
DANIEL is sitting on the curb. He looks upward into the rain and back down to the street. He kicks the water lining the curb and sends leaves down the river as boats.
CHRISTINE approaches from behind. She sits next to him. He doesn't look up as he releases another leaf into the water. They watch it move off. He picks up another leaf. Christine follows suit and they both release them into the water.
CHRISTINEMine won.
Daniel looks up at her and gives a forced smile.
CHRISTINEAre you crying?
DANIEL(dryly)It's raining.
CHRISTINEIs that what this is? There goes my gods pissing theory.
Beat.
Daniel is unresponsive.
CHRISTINEWhat's wrong, rich boy?
DANIELI'm afraid.
CHRISTINEWell, you know. Kristofer can be a little intense and intimidating. But he really ---
DANIELOf me.
-beat-
It's like I'm trying so hard to be Daniel. And to have black hair with red highlights. And to wear second-hand shirts and a girl's size five that I'm being an image of Daniel and not --- I dunno. Me.
CHRISTINEWhat's one of the first things I told you? "You gotta learn to read people better." No one in there is really being them. Everyone's an image. Everyone's an imprint of what they want to be. And no one's an imprint of what they want to be. We create ourselves, Daniel. And you'll only know yourself as completely as you'll know someone else. And that's not very well.
-beat-
We meet ourselves everyday.
DANIELThat's bullshit. You're yourself.
CHRISTINEI'm who you know me to be.
Daniel sighs and tosses another leaf downstream.
CHRISTINEYou're doing alright, D. Now, quit raining and come inside.
Daniel stands.
DANIELI think I'd rather go home.
Christine stands.
CHRISTINEI'll walk you.
DANIELWhat about Nikki and Kristofer?
CHRISTINEEh. They'll be fine.
They begin walking.
CHRISTINEHey. We could get clothes and go finish painting the show room.
Daniel sighs.
CHRISTINEOkay. Scratch that.
DANIELLook. Just go back inside. I'll call you tomorrow or something.
Christine hesitates.
DANIELPlease.
Christine sighs.
CHRISTINEOkay. Tomorrow then.
Daniel walks off. Christine moves back toward the club.
