I've been dealing with insomnia since I went back to work. I think I had 12 hours of sleep since the weekend. It's so freaking hot and humid.
And I have an appointment tomorrow morning that makes me really nervous. So what am I doing instead of sleeping? A meme of course. And not any meme....THE MOTHER OF ALL MEMES.
I'M CAVING IN.
01. Discuss how you got into Harry Potter
If I remember correctly, I had read a very enthusiastic newspaper report about the first three books. It was in 2000. I bought the first, spend the whole night reading, and visited the bookstore the next day to buy CoS and PoA. I enjoyed them so much that I offered Mr Red to read them aloud during a 6 hour car trip. We were both hooked. Mr Red gave me the French version of GoF on my birthday - I remember it well since we were traveling and the scenary was out of this world.
What grabbed me, I think, was how, even so early in the series, I was getting a sense of a complex and comprehensive universe, where details had been thought about. I loved Harry and McGonagall as characters. But what really made the difference for me to be so into the books was that it was never a solitary experience. I've read this story aloud in a middle of a snowstorm to someone who was as delighted as I was. I've passed the books around and a friend ended up loving them. Heck, my mom was pretty much in love with Harry. And then I found fandom by mistake, many years later, when I was trying to write an alternative year 6 story and Mary Sue-ing the hell of an original character. I found TQP ten minutes later, and then CM. Harry Potter became much more than books to me.
