I just started Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal, and I can't tell y'all what a relief it is after - or rather, during - Malinche. Reading a book which is a) aimed at people approximately half my age and b) one I've already read in English is so much easier. I like Malinche very much (I think; I also think I have some serious issues with it, but it's hard to be sure), but about the only thing to be grateful for there is that Esquivel likes to repeat herself in several different ways, so after struggling through a page of description and philosophizing I can come away with the overall knowledge that Malinalli is cold and her feet hurt and not have missed anything plotwise.
On that note, I give you the Summerlist, which has been pruned again - this time because I seriously cannot take any more of this shite from scholars in the sixties on Spain. It's one thing to read old stuff about like France or England, because it's all like, "Ooh, they're so cool, empire, cultural importance, wonderful art, impressive leadership, la di da", and the prejudice is easier to stomach. But old stuff about Spain is so horrifically condescending that I give up.
