Columbus was quiet. I enjoyed sitting in the silence between characters. Every word felt weighted, but not over bearing. The architecture was used beautifully, I don't want to say it helped tell the story, but in movie entirety about conversations between two people, it became a useful tool of remind me of previous conversation occuring in the same spot, and just once again the weight of it all.
I enjoy that her name was Casey. I like that his name if Jin. It all seems so sweet, so real, so innocent. At it's core it's a coming of age story, and it goes to show that you can come of age at any age, we're in a constant process of growing, and we should remind ourselves not to stop doing so, even if it means leaving others behind we might feel like we need to protect. That's probably just my opinion though, haha. Pulled from personal experience. Sounds a lot like me.
In the end, it's quite touching. The final scene in bed between Casey and her mother really pulled at my emotions for some reason, it kind of suprised me. It might have just been the abruptness of the change, the tenderness of the moment (how universal is laying in bed with another person, for pure comfort), and the truly powerful acting of Hayley Lu Richardson. She conveys so much, very simply.
Comprehensively, the movie just works on so many levels. It's compelling visuals, excellent music, great acting, and a solid word of plot (although potentially slow at times). The composition on the screen is clearly thought out, we get so many recycled shots from the same angles, but they echo througout the piece, as does the past conversations and the past events that happened in those shots. It also feels suprisingly claustrophobic for a piece that takes place in the midwest, but that's probably due to how many of the shots are framed through doorways, or windows, or with a wall taking up half the screen.
Oh man, and that great mirror scene. Just lots going on in this flick. Really enjoyed it, even if it did drag at parts. It felt like coming home. Creaks in the house, noises of turning on a shower.
