Toronto was really nice. I know all you Montrealers will hate me for saying that.
Anyway, I got in Thursday afternoon and had to kill a few hours before my show. I had a late lunch at this sketchy pita place. It had a "pass" on the health inspector's certificate (great how they post those, there) but you could see where the Sharpie had paused on the "conditional pass" checkbox. Ew. Then I wandered around Honest Ed's for a bit. I liked how there was a Dirty Dancing poster up in the religious icons section.
I loved the Tranzac. It was unpretentious and cool at the same time. They have three rooms for events, plus a zine library and an office for ☐☐☐☐☐☐ recording club. I played in the Southern Cross lounge which looks like an old clubhouse with Christmas lights and a real piano. I realized that watching the hammers go by as I play is very relaxing. I got flattered a musician friend afterward. He said he found my songs well composed and more interesting than you generally expect from a singer-songwriter. Aww.
Friday I wandered around Toronto by myself. Down from Ossington & Bloor to Queen Street West to Parkdale and back northeast again to St. Clair & Yonge. Wandering from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with lots of shopping and eating along the way. I had lunch at a nice cafe on Ossington (I think) called Get Real. It was perfect for that snowy, solitary day. It was a vegetarian cafe with magazines to peruse and linger over. In the evening I went over to my aunt's for dinner. We had raclette and good Australian wine (my uncle's parents have a vineyard in Australia so I guess he knows his stuff). After dinner my cousin and I sang together. She's in first year of voice performance at U of T.
I was staying with my friend Marina and we got to have a nice chat that night when I got 'home'. We talked about marriage and books and honesty vs. manners and her trip to Japan. She said some nice things about Eric and me... about how she thought we were perfect for one another, and how she could imagine us going on bicycle camping trips for the rest of our lives and how I'd make an awesome mom. I hope she's right and I have a feeling she is. :)
Next show in 7 days.
love,
