I made one of these for this series a couple years ago and was pretty darn proud of myself, since a lot of this (or the timing of it) is never directly said but needs to be actively looked for (parts in italics are ones where I'm still iffy on their placement except for towards the end since the pace of the series REALLY speeds up and a lot of it is happening on top of itself, so I didn't even bother). I'll probably come back to this at some point and polish it up. I might have forgotten some things idk.
BTW this is super spoiler-y. :|b
a really, really long time ago
- Literally ages ago there are two kingdoms in their world, each occupying the entirety of the two continents, Dusis and Arinas. Dusis is ruled by the Dragon Tribe. The King of Arinas (along with others) appears to be human but his bride seems to be Dragon.
- The King of Arinas gives the Three Treasures to the King of Dusis.
- The Demon, Kharl the Alchemist, residing on Arinas, creates the ultimate demon to rule the continent.
- Kharl and his newly-created "master"--the Demon King of Arinas--attack the King of Arinas.
- The King of Dusis joins in the war on the side of the King of Arinas.
- The Heaven Star Princess, apparent bride of the King of Arinas and capable of seeing the future, makes a duplicate of the Wind Staff, an item used to harness the power of Dusis' Wind Dragon. She is unable to make a duplicate of the Diolasis, one of the Three Treasures used to maximize the Wind Staff's power. She then travels through a portal her mother made with her companion, Grinfish, to the future.
- The Demon King of Arinas kills the King of Arinas. The King of Dusis kills the Demon King of Arinas and traps his soul in a sanctuary under the Dragon Castle. Kharl in retaliation traps the soul of the King of Arinas in his castle, where he causes it to suffer death repeatedly. He also takes and hides the Three Treasures and places a curse on Arinas so that no new life can come from it.
- At this same time, the Demon Fish Varawoo floods the Faerie Forests on Dusis, killing many members of the Spirit Tribe (elves and faeries).
- The Kingdom of Dusis largely falls apart. It now called Draqueen and it shares the continent with five other nations.
still a long time ago
- Many, many years later, Lykouleon becomes Dragon Lord. At some point during or around this time he gets two of the five members of his council--Ruwalk, Yellow Dragon Officer (Secretary of State and presumably a friend and member of the Dragon Clan from before Lykouleon became king); Alfeegi, White Dragon Officer (Secretary of the Treasury). He possibly also had an unnamed Red Dragon Officer (in charge of military offense) who would then have died prior to the start of the series.
- Sabel, an elf in the Spirit Tribe, hears a voice calling to him from the Water Realm (a sort-of-other-dimension attached to the Faerie Forest). The Faerie Elder encourages him to seek it out, believing it to be the missing Water Dragon. It is a trap, however, and Sabel is pitted against Varawoo who was lying in wait, unable to leave and in a stalemate with the Water Dragon, and captured by the Demon Lord Nadil, ruler of Kainaldia in another dimension (or world, depending on how you translate the concept). He is turned into a demon in Nadil's service and is made to forget about his past. Nadil gives him power taken from Varawoo and manifested in the form of another giant fish named Galaba and subverts the power he already had as an elf and returns it to him in the shape of a demonic pixie-like creature named Metatuara. Sabel creates the Sea of the Dead, a moat made of hungry souls, surrounding Nadil's castle.
long ago
- Nadil opens up a portal between Dusis and Kainaldia and invades with his armies.
- Three of the demons on Nadil's side (the siblings Tetheus, Shydeman, and Shyrendora) are grievously wounded. Their potential is recognized by both Nadil and Lykouleon and all three are saved. Tetheus is made a member of the Dragon Tribe and the Black Dragon Officer (Secretary of Defense) by Lykouleon. Shydeman and Shyrendora have their souls combined and redistributed by Nadil and are made into his two chief officers.
- It seems that it is at this time that Nadil ties his soul to the soul of the Demon King of Arinas so that his own cannot be destroyed, although he leaves him trapped under the Dragon Castle.
- Lykouleon wins the war against Nadil. Nadil and his forces are pushed back into Kainaldia.
officially within the realm of flashbacks
- Lykouleon meets Kaistern when traveling around the countryside. Kaistern becomes the Blue Dragon Officer (Secretary of Foreign Affairs).
- Sometime around here (or possibly closer to his second invasion of Draqueen) Nadil discovers the location of the Wind Dragon, hidden in a cave in Glaciosia at the far Northern end of the continent. He is accepted by it as its true knight and then devours it, incorporating its powers into him. He also destroys the Wind Staff.
- Lord Lykouleon marries Lady Raseleane. The two had been introduced as children many years ago. Raseleane is chosen for queen because she is a member of the Dragon Tribe and is born with Dragon Eyes, bestowing upon her magical powers to grant wishes and see the future. (Similarly, Lykouleon's blood has magical properties making it dangerous to others when undiluted.)
- Nadil invades Dusis a second time, stealing away Lady Raseleane to a castle he has had set up in Hyuray, a largely uninhabited nation to the NE. The only people living there are members of the Spirit Tribe, put into an enchanted sleep by Nadil. The Earth Dragon is sent into its own sleep in a rock embedded in the wall of the Dragon Castle. A little time before this Rune and Tintlet, the current prince and princess of the Spirit Tribe, are born.
- Lykouleon's depression over the loss of his wife plunges Dusis into deep winter. At some point in this confusion, Kharl sneaks into the Dragon Castle and releases the soul of the Demon King of Arinas.
- Nadil, having placed a magical seal on Raseleane so that she is unaware of her surroundings, removes her Dragon Eyes (taking away her traditional claim to the throne), places a curse on her so that she cannot bear Lykouleon a child, and fathers (presumably through magical means) a girl with her who he names Cesia. Cesia is kept unaware of her heritage. She is disguised as a human child and sent to live with the witch who lives in the Misty Valley in Draqueen, where she reads about the Wind Staff in the witch's library.
- Lykouleon journeys by himself to Hyuray to confront Nadil. He meets the Faerie Elder and gives him some of his blood in order to wake the rest of the Spirit Tribe. He is attacked by the cursed dragon dogs Snow Crewger and Ice Illuser but breaks the magical chains placed upon them, causing them to join him and fight with him against Nadil. Nadil places a curse on Lykouleon but is not able to activate it. Illuser dies. Lykouleon cuts off Nadil's head but fails to kill him. Nadil and his subordinates allow Lykouleon to take back Raseleane and remove to Kainaldia.
- Bierrez, a young fire demon and brother to Fedelta, stays in the castle with his friend after all the other demons abandoned it. He goes to inspect Illuser's body and accidentally touches some of Lykouleon's blood. Although it should have killed him, he is only temporarily stunned. Suddenly he realizes there is something taking place behind him. He turns around in time to see the soul of the Demon King of Arinas pulling itself together and then entering Illuser's body. Illuser, now controlled by this demonic spirit, bites off Bierrez' arm and mortally wounds his friend who, using the remnants of his power, gives Bierrez his own arm before dying. Unbeknownst to Bierrez, Kharl then collects his friend's body and brings it back to his own castle in Arinas.
- Almost immediately after returning to the Dragon Castle, word reaches Lykouleon that a demon is on the loose, killing everyone in its path and devouring their souls, including the Faerie Elder and many members of the Spirit Tribe. Kharl, following in the wake of the beast, changes several dying members of the Spirit Tribe into demons, including an elf named Silk. Nadil and his forces are aware of this demon but make no move to either help or hinder it.
- Lykouleon goes to confront the demon, bringing the officers with him. He recognizes the body it has inhabited as Illuser's, however, and is unable to kill it, feeling that it must have taken on that form for a reason. He instead gives it his own blood and (as it has already seriously wounded Ruwalk and taken some of his flesh) initiates it into the Dragon Clan. The demon takes on the appearance of a small boy and loses all memories of his past. Ruwalk names the child Illuser, after the dog it was inhabiting. Kaistern feels this is too cruel and calls him Rath.
- Rath, as Lykouleon's blood brother, is the new heir to the throne. He receives the Light Dragon as a mark of his royal status.
-Rath claims Crewger and the Fire Dragon as well, gaining ice and fire magic and becoming the Dragon Knight of Fire.
slightly less long ago
- The Faerie Forests are still scattered and access to the Water Realm is still limited after the destruction caused by the Demon King of Arinas. Rune hears a voice calling to him from the Water Realm. Salazar, the spirit of the deceased (it is unknown when she was alive) fortuneteller working for the Dragon Castle, announces that the Water Dragon is calling for his knight. Rune is summoned to the Dragon Castle and convinced to give up his old life to become a member of the Dragon Tribe. Lykouleon, in disguise, ventures into the Water Realm with him. The Water Dragon is still locked in a struggle with Varawoo who is still receiving power from Nadil. Delte, another elf and fortuneteller, warns Tintlet of the danger. Tintlet intervenes in the struggle, using her magic to lock both Varawoo and herself in an enchanted sleep in the Water Realm. Rune becomes the Dragon Knight of Water.
- At some point prior to Kharl's next encounter with Rath, he picks up a human boy named Garfakcy and brings him back to Arinas to work for him. Garfakcy is given a greatly extended lifespan with Kharl's magic.
- Rath, still very young, sneaks out of the castle with Crewger and the Fire Dragon. He makes his way to the nearby mountains where Kharl is waiting for him. Kharl removes his Dragon Amulet (given to demons living as members of the Dragon Tribe and used to keep their demon side at bay) and infuses him with demon seeds, giving him greater powers and seeking to turn him back into a full demon. Kaistern finds Rath but is unable to save him. The Light Dragon appears and protects Rath. Rath kills Left Bird. Kharl leaves. Kaistern, believing Rath to be dead, is visited by the Heaven Star Princess who tells him that the Light Dragon has effectively died having to expend so much energy to save Rath and, as Rath's life force is tied to it, Rath while not yet dead will die soon as well. She tells Kaistern than he needs to find the Wind Dragon in order to revive the Light Dragon. The souls of the Faerie Elder and Left Bird escape from Rath.
- The souls of the Faerie Elder and of Left Bird are reborn as Nohiro, a human, and Zoma, a demon. Both bear resemblance to Rath and have some of his power within them. Nohiro wanders the countryside as a young man without memory of his past but a desire to learn about the Spirit Tribe. Zoma is split into two bodies: a crippled young boy and the large bird he rides on. He lives with Cesia in the Misty Valley and is in love with her.
now within the realm of a normal human lifespan
- Kharl hunts down Gil, the real Dragon Knight of Fire, in Glaciosia and turns him into a cat demon. He gives him to Nadil with the intention that he will one day be fought and killed by Rath.
- Fedelta has risen to work directly under Shydeman in Nadil's army. Bierrez on the other hand is a rebel without a cause. The spirit of a demon who used to work under the Demon King of Arinas and is now trapped in the dungeons under Nadil's castle escapes and attempts to kidnap Cesia. Bierrez rescues and falls in love with her. Cesia recognizes Bierrez as the true Red Dragon Officer. Bierrez and Gil meet.
- Thatz and Kitchel are born.
- Kitchel is hired by Lykouleon to look for the pieces of the map to the Three Treasures. Thatz attempts to steal the rock housing the Earth Dragon, is possessed by Shydeman and freed by Lykouleon and Earth. Thatz becomes the Dragon Knight of Earth.
- Rath, Rune, and Thatz sneak out of the castle to look for Oleeg, the guardian spirit of treasure. They instead encounter the Salem King Jin, spirit of fire. Thatz overhears Rath call himself a "false Dragon Knight" and the Salem King Jin call him "the Lord of Light and Darkness".
- Nadil creates a portal between Kainaldia and Dusis. Rath, Rune, and Thatz are sent by Lykouleon to battle Nadil. Nadil allows Rath to behead him again. The three knights journey across Dusis with Nadil's head and trailed closely by Shydeman.
start of book 1
- The knights meet Cesia in the Misty Valley. They accidentally defeat the witch and in doing so break her power over Cesia. Cesia makes her way towards the capital with Zoma, working as a fortuneteller. The spell laid upon her that makes her look like a human begins to wear off and her true form is not recognizable as demon.
- The knights meet both Delte and Kitchel during their misadventures on their journey home. Rune is revealed to be an elven prince.
- The knights meet Cesia once more. She takes Nadil's head from them and brings it to the Dragon Castle before they arrive, seeking safety from Nadil's forces. She becomes the castle's new fortuneteller. Zoma is also welcomed and allowed past the magical barrier surrounding it.
- The knights arrive (after being found and escorted by Lykouleon, at which time Thatz finds a small green stone which he later has made into a pendant on a necklace) at the castle. Kaistern reunites Rath with Crewger. Raseleane momentarily mistakes Rath for Nadil. Raseleane gives one Dragon Eye each to Rune and Thatz and the seal placed upon her when she was captured by Nadil to Rath, although she leaves it in Cesia's safekeeping.
- Lykouleon and Raseleane tell Cesia that Rath is a demon and that Raseleane has a premonition that he will one day need the seal.
- Bierrez finds Zoma and forces him to tell him what happened to Cesia. He then tells Shydeman and Shyrendora that Cesia is at the Dragon Castle and that he, having survived touching Lykouleon's blood, can enter it safely.
- Bierrez enters the Dragon Castle and confronts Cesia but is forced to leave by Rath, who recognizes him from when he attacked him in Illuser's body.
- Rath tells Zoma about their connection and combines him with his bird, making it so that he can walk. Rath tells Zoma that he is going to die one day soon and that he will need him (or Nohiro, but Rath does not know where he is) to take his place as the next Dragon Lord.
- Bierrez launches an attack on the Dragon Castle using demons he made from his own blood using methods laid down in Kharl's Demon Bible. He is fought off by Rath and realizes who he really is. Rune regains the healing powers he lost after becoming a member of the Dragon Tribe. Garfakcy, spying on Rath and Bierrez for Kharl, transports Bierrez to Kharl's castle in Arinas. Kharl laces Bierrez' arm with demon seed, giving him additional powers.
- Thatz confronts Rath over his suspicions that he is a demon.
- Kaistern is convinced by Rath to stay one extra night in the castle, recognizing that Rath is scared and angry that Thatz discovered his secret. Kaistern pierces Rath's ears.
- Thatz is sent with Kitchel to find the last piece of the map and the Three Treasures. Kaistern leaves with them, still secretly searching for the Wind Dragon.
- Rune is sent to learn about the sudden disappearance of the Spirit Tribe. Kharl has been having Garfakcy hunt elves and faeries for an unknown length of time and bring them back to him.
- Bierrez enters the Dragon Castle a third time. Garfakcy goes to look for Nadil's Head and is found by Cesia. Garfakcy attempts to kill her with a death seed in order to bring her to Kharl. Crewger is killed instead and tells Cesia that Rath is going to die and that she will need to use his body when she finds a way to revive Rath. Kharl manipulates Bierrez and tries to get him to kill Cesia. Bierrez asks Rath to kill him instead. Rath changes back into a demon and absorbs Bierrez into him.
- Rath is secretly made the Red Dragon Officer.
- Cesia leaves the castle to look for the Wind Staff in Glaciosia. Rath makes Zoma pretend to be him and leaves him with Fire in the castle in order to sneak out and travel with Cesia.
- At about this time, demons in the nearby nation of Hermosa working under Fedelta and Shydeman's orders start burning humans to create a life-sucking black smoke that also gives power to Varawoo.
second story arc
- Tintlet leaves her physical body in the Water Realm but changes her spiritual self into a little girl and steals the power that the demons were giving Varawoo in the form of a large black egg. Unfortunately, she is unable to speak in this form. She heads towards the Dragon Castle.
- At about this time Lykouleon and Alfeegi go to Hermosa to investigate information about demons and a deadly black smoke. They discover that everyone in the capital city and surrounding areas has died. Alfeegi accidentally sees a young girl who tells him her name is Riima. She is one of two (the other is a man named Durma) Death Faeries who lead virtuous souls to the afterlife and who can only be seen by those who will die soon. She tells him that Nadil's Head is in danger of being stolen away.
- Kharl gives Garfakcy an old demon egg he created to give to Shydeman and Shyrendora when he goes to Nadil's castle to tell them where the Three Treasures are hidden. Shydeman breaks open the egg and is surprised to find that three insect demons are inside it.
- Thatz and Kitchel find the final piece of the map and rescue Ringleys, a faerie. They put the map together using the Dragon Eye and Thatz' necklace. Fedelta spies on them and on Rath and Cesia and reports back to Shydeman, also telling him that Bierrez has died. Shydeman sends Gil to guard the cave at Glaciosia and the three demons from Kharl to intercept Thatz and Kitchel.
- Rune seeks out Delte. She tells him about the "One-Winged Angel" who has been murdering the members of the Spirit Tribe. She also tells him that Rath is a demon. Rune meets Nohiro. Nohiro recognizes Rune as an elf, although Rune denies it. Rune meets Tintlet in her disguise but does not realize it is her.
- Cesia learns that Rath forced Zoma to take his place at the Dragon Castle and the two temporarily part ways past the Draqueen/Hermosa border. Cesia enters Bertha's Forest and falls under a curse changing her into a sacred, a small rabbit-like animal considered by many to be holy. Rath realizes that his life force has become low enough that now that he is beyond the protection of the Dragon Lord he quickly loses energy. Rath recognizes Cesia in her sacred form and buys her from a vendor. The two of them ask a fortuneteller for help, not realizing that the Heaven Star Princess is now following them and helping out the fortuneteller. The fortuneteller explains how to break the curse laid on Cesia and tells Rath that his guardian dragon is getting weaker and that Rath himself wishes to die. Cesia thinks she is talking about the Fire Dragon, not the Light Dragon. Rath breaks the curse on Cesia.
- Thatz, Kitchel, and Ringleys set out on a small boat for Arinas and the Three Treasures.
- Rune, Nohiro, and Tintlet set out on a ship for Hyuray. Fedelta follows them. When they arrive on Hyuray, he captures Tintlet and takes back the egg and forces her to take him to the Water Realm. Silk attacks Rune but Nohiro recognizes her as originally a member of the Spirit Tribe and is wounded keeping Rune from hurting her. He undoes the spell Kharl placed upon her and she reverts to her original form but dies without the demon magic keeping her alive. Nohiro uses the power of rebirth without understanding what he is doing and sends her immediately to her next incarnation. Rune reveals to Nohiro that he is also a member of the Spirit Tribe. Rune and Nohiro hurry to the Water Realm and working with Tintlet the three of them defeat Varawoo and Fedelta. Rune absorbs Varawoo's power into himself and does not realize that Shydeman is pleased with this outcome. Nohiro purifies the Water Realm, again without understanding how. Tintlet is freed from the Water Realm.
- Nohiro leaves on his quest to learn about his past with three faeries: Shian, Hanakusuku, and Miyabi. Rune journeys back to the Dragon Castle. Shortly after, Tintlet leaves to seek out the Water of Rebirth.
- Thatz, Kitchel, and Ringleys capsize and wash up on the island with the Three Treasures. They are attacked by the three demons sent by Shydeman. Thatz sends Kitchel and Ringleys into the cave housing the treasures and then destroys the entrance before defeating the demons. He then travels back to Draqueen.
- Alfeegi discovers that Zoma is covering for Rath at the Dragon Castle.
- Rath tells Cesia about the Wind Dragon. Rath and Cesia travel to Kuulta. Cesia enters the Water of Purity and loses her memories. She is abducted by some of Nadil's demons and has her Dragon Amulet removed, causing her demon side to take over. She and Rath fight but he finds himself unable to hurt her and she reverts back to her normal self after he attempts to kill himself. She tells Rath that she won't let him die.
- Tetheus and three of the Dragon Fighters fall into a cave that overlaps with the cavernous dimension Kitchel and Ringleys are trapped in. Kitchel meets Tetheus and starts obsessing about him.
- Kaistern arrives in Glaciosia and meets Gil. Gil tells him the creature he had heard rumor of is just a demon and does not have healing powers.
- Fire leaves to follow Rath.
- Thatz arrives in Draqueen and saves Delte from Garfakcy. Delte tells Thatz that Rune knows Rath's secret.
- Kharl tells Garfakcy that they have collected enough elves and faeries for him to create a replacement for Left Bird. He creates a creature that looks similar to Illuser and Crewger and calls it Sinistera. Kharl apparently uses or connects it with the body of Bierrez' friend who was killed by the Demon King of Arinas in the body of Illuser. Kharl reveals that he will be using Sinistera and Right Bird to create a replica of the Demon King of Arinas. The replica in its unfinished state looks like Marcy's deformed fetus is called the Origin.
- Rath and Cesia arrive in Glaciosia and get rooms in an inn. Fire is discovered by Gil, staying with his human brother and niece who run the inn. Fire recognizes Gil as his real master and attempts to protect him from Shyrendora and Garfakcy, both of whom show up to manipulate him. Gil reverts to his demon form and attacks Kaistern when he attempts to enter the cave on the mountainside. Fiji sees Gil as a demon. Rath and Cesia try to follow Gil but end up tracking an unknown creature.
- Kaistern tells Cesia in secret about his search for the Wind Dragon. He tells her that she might be the Wind Dragon Knight but she senses this is not the case. They agree to work together to find the Wind Dragon.
- Thatz convinces Delte to stay in the Dragon Castle.
- Kaistern attempts to distract Gil while Cesia enters the cave. She finds Shydeman and Shyrendora waiting for her. Rath shows up and causes a diversion before escaping with Cesia.
- Rath and Gil fight. Gil is the more powerful of the two and would have won except that Fiji, his young niece, intervenes and is killed, breaking Shyrendora's mind control over him and shocking him back to his human self. Cesia discovers Rath's Dragon Amulet.
- Kaistern and Cesia enter the cave. They meet the Heaven Star Princess, who tells them that the Wind Dragon is dead and gives Cesia a replica of the Wind Staff.
- Rath and Gil fight again. Rath wins and tells Fire that he knows that Gil should be the Dragon Knight of Fire. Rath absorbs Gil into him.
- Rath sees the same creature he had been following the previous night and chases after it, thinking it is Crewger. It leads him to a clone of Kharl who tells him it is Sinistera and that he made it to look like the form Rath took when he was a demon. Rath kills the clone. Garfakcy reports all of this back to Kharl.
- Cesia is abducted by Shydeman and Shyrendora, who remove her Dragon Amulet and bring out her demon side. Rath finds and fights her. Kaistern arrives and tries to prevent Cesia from pouring Revival Water on Rath but fails and is drenched in it as well. Nadil's spirit enters into Rath and takes control of him. Rath runs off. Kaistern puts the Dragon Amulet back on Cesia and she regains control.
- Kaistern and Cesia make their way back to the Dragon Castle.
- Nohiro (with the three Faeries) makes his way to Kainaldia falling a mysterious voice. The voice belongs to the spirit of the King of Arinas, trapped in Kharl's castle. Nohiro frees him and is chased by Garfakcy. He accidentally releases the Origin. Shian and Hanakusuku are killed, although Nohiro manages to use the Power of Rebirth on Shian. Nohiro and Miyabi speak to Tintlet who is traveling in Arinas looking for the Water of Purity.
- Lim Kaana captures Tintlet, although it is unclear if Lim goes to Arinas or if Tintlet goes to Kainaldia. She splits her into body (in the form of a human girl), memory, and soul. Lim Kaana takes control of Tintlet's body as a puppet and takes on her memories, but Tintlet's soul escapes.
third story arc
- Lykouleon starts to bleed uncontrollably.
- Rath arrives at the Dragon Castle with Fire. No one knows he is harboring Nadil's spirit.
- Rath realizes that he loves Cesia and that he is putting everyone in danger by being at the castle. He attempts to sneak off but Nadil gains control before he is able to leave. Nadil, through Rath, discovers that Rune has absorbed Varawoo's power and that the spells guarding Nadil's head are unfinished.
- Cesia leaves the Dragon Castle to meet the Heaven Star Princess and learn how to use the Wind Staff.
- Alfeegi obsesses over Riima and what she has told him. He discovers Nadil attempting to break through the spells guarding Nadil's head. Nadil mortally wounds Alfeegi. Nadil helps Varawoo take control of Rune. Varawoo opens up a portal between Kainaldia and the Dragon Castle and starts to flood Dusis.
- Delte warns Thatz that something is happening and realizes that the protective barrier around the Dragon Castle has been gone for many days, making it possible for demons to enter. Thatz and Fedelta fight. Shydeman and Shyrendora work at destroying the spells guarding Nadil's head.
- Alfeegi is visited by Riima and tells her he loves her. She grants him his wish to have Rath temporarily regain control. Alfeegi dies and becomes the third Death Faerie.
- Rath regains control of his body and tries to convince Thatz to kill him. Nadil realizes that an outside force with more power than he has is responsible.
- Lykouleon tries to break Varawoo's hold on Rune. Thatz and Tetheus go to deal with the demons in the castle and to try and stop Shydeman and Shyrendora. Lykouleon gives Rune too much power and although he frees him from possession, he also kills him. Rune is brought back by the White Dragon Crystal (and becomes the White Dragon Officer), released from Alfeegi. Lykouleon realizes Alfeegi has died.
- Ruwalk had found Alfeegi's body moments before he died and retrieved Avis Laira, the castle's doctor and Kharl in disguise, to tend to him. They arrive too late and are present when the White Dragon Crystal leaves Alfeegi's body.
- Tetheus realizes that Shydeman and Shyrendora are alive and reveals to Thatz that he is their older brother. Nadil (still in Rath's body), Lykouleon, and Rune arrive as the final seal protecting Nadil's head is broken. Nadil cuts off Rath's head and places his own on Rath's body. Raseleane arrives in a trance, summoned by Nadil. Nadil reveals his intention to have Raseleane bear him a son and heir and finishes placing his curse on Lykouleon. Thatz and Rune manage to spirit everyone to relative safety.
- Cesia manages to change Crewger's body into a human body for Rath and has gathered up the pieces of his soul and the other souls that reside in him, but is unable to bring him back to life with the Wind Staff without the Diolasis. Kaistern reveals that he has been poisoned with Revival Water and gives Rath his lifeforce, dying and becoming another one of the spirits living in Rath. Cesia revives Rath. Kaistern's spirit briefly visits Thatz before entering Rath's body and gives him the Blue Dragon Crystal, making Thatz the Blue Dragon Officer.
- Cesia tells Rath about how he was revived and that she will always be there for him. She leaves with Nadil to get him to call off the siege of the castle. Kharl visits Rath while he sleeps and gives him a small piece of holy rock. Ruwalk, now ruling in Lykouleon's stead, gives the knights permission to search for the demon Tetheus told them about who is able to open a portal to Kainaldia and to rescue Cesia.
- Kharl returns to Arinas and decides not to continue work on the Origin but to instead help Rath in his quest against Nadil.
fourth story arc
- Kitchel and Ringleys are helped by the newly freed spirit of the King of Arinas out of the Cave of the Three Treasures. He first takes them to Mirette's Cave (where Kitchel had met up with the knights in the first book) so that Kitchel can use one of the three bottles of Salbacion (one of the Three Treasures) to break the curse on the Ice Sword. She is told that the Ice Sword is the only thing that can defeat its twin, the Fire Blade, and that she needs to give it to Thatz. The specter then takes Kitchel and Ringleys to the only exit out of the alter-dimension inside the cave: Kainaldia. He departs for the afterlife. They are followed by Fedelta but lose him once they enter the Forest of the Dead, where they are then followed by Sabel and his zombies.
- The knights find Sabel controlling the body of a young human woman who had an affair with Nadil at some point in the recent past. Zoma travels with the Wind Staff for Cesia to Kainaldia through the portal he is able to reach by entering any mirror. Delte sees Zoma's wings. Sabel steals the Water Dragon but panics when he realizes Rune is an elf and accidentally opens the portal to Kainaldia. Rath is warned of the danger of their original plan to enter Kainaldia through a portal in Galaba by a mysterious voice (probably either one of the spirits inside him or Kharl). The knights arrive in Kainaldia through the portal Sabel opens. Sabel is taken, weakened and in disgrace, by Fedelta to Nadil's castle.
- Zoma meets Tintlet's spirit lost in the realm between the dimensions on his journey to Kainaldia but does not know who she is.
- The knights meet two Tintlets: Lim Kaana in disguise and Tintlet's soulless body that she controls. Lim Kaana attempts to take the power of Varawoo from Rune, but is unable to. He takes Tintlet's body and chases after her to retrieve Tintlet's memories.
- Sabel is given the Black Thunder Demon (with Laamgarnas' soul trapped in it) to help with his work.
- Kitchel and Ringleys meet Zoma and Tintlet and the four of them decide to go to Nadil's castle together to give Cesia the Wind Staff. Rath and Thatz make their own way to Nadil's castle to rescue Cesia. Rune fights Lim Kaana over Tintlet's memories. Tintlet's spirit renters her body when Rune meets up with her group. Zoma and Ringleys get lost and end up with Rath and Thatz (the Wind Staff ends up with Kitchel). Lim Kaana tries to kill Tintlet, Rune is captured by Fedelta who leaves with Lim Kaana (quickly falling in love with Rune in large part because of holding onto Tintlet's memories), Kitchel and Tintlet chase after them to Nadil's castle to rescue Rune. Rath's group manages to cross the Sea of the Dead with the help of Kharl who sends Fiji's spirit to guide them.
- Delte senses Laamgarnas and begins to understand what happened to him.
- Lim Kaana defects after learning that Fedelta is planning on consuming Rune after drawing the power of Varawoo out of him and helps Rune escape. She is devolved as punishment and loses her human form. Cesia senses Rune and gives him power to help him; in return she is sent to a more isolated area of the castle by Shydeman.
- Rune with Lim Kaana meets up with everyone else in the castle. He and Tintlet save Lim Kaana, replacing her demon powers with elven magic and give her back her human form. When she runs off Kitchel, Tintlet, Ringleys, and Zoma chase after her while Rune, Rath, and Thatz are confronted by Nadil.
- Nadil (with Fedelta) tells the knights that his and Rath's souls are connected. Rath tries to kill himself in order that the others can kill Nadil, but is stopped by Cesia's spirit and Thatz. Rath is taken prisoner and locked away under Nadil's castle where he will be transported to another dimension to be kept. Thatz and Rune are imprisoned in the dungeons and surrounded by Revival Water.
- The others hear what happened to the knights and meet up with Lim Kaana. They convince her to take them to the Water of Purity in the desert in order to save Rune and Thatz. Zoma stays in the castle to give Cesia the Wind Staff. In the desert they meet Leelu Reel. She and Lim Kaana fight and Lim Kaana takes her power and turns her into water. Fedelta attacks the others but they are saved by the Water of Purity.
- Cesia's dark side takes over her body. Zoma is led to a mirror connected to the one in Cesia's new room by Sinistera (in Nadil's castle to collect Kharl's old things). She attacks him but Rath is convinced by Bierrez and Gil's spirits to reach out to her and bring her back to herself. Zoma changes into his true form of a large bird and he and Cesia break out of the cell.
- Cesia and Zoma break into the prison where Rath is being kept. Cesia uses the seal given to her by Raseleane to free all the souls within Rath including his own, causing his body to revert back to Crewger's. Nadil tries to stop them but they flee. The part of Rath's soul that was inside Nadil is freed as well. Gil's soul meets Fire. Kaistern's soul says goodbye to Rath and moves on to prepare to be reincarnated.
- Thatz attempts to break out of the cell and accidentally releases the Revival Water. The Water of Purity neutralizes the Revival Water. Shyrendora shows up and attacks them. Cesia breaks through the prison on Zoma and Thatz and Rune use her ability to enhance power to break out of the cell. Tintlet defeats Shyrendora with her magic. They all leave the castle.
- Cesia and Tintlet temporarily purify part of the land around the castle so that they can land on it. Cesia summons and revives Bierrez (the new Red Dragon Officer) and Gil (the new Fire Dragon Knight). Everyone gets new clothes (lololol). Fedelta attacks and Cesia opens a portal to Draqueen. Kitchel gives Thatz the Ice Sword. Gil, Tintlet, Ringleys, and Kitchel go through the portal, and Kitchel drops a vial of Salbacion on the ground, accidentally starting the process of purifying it for good. Cesia, Rune, and Lim Kaana flee into Nadil's castle. Thatz and Bierrez end up in the system of tunnels under it.
- Shydeman sends a shapeshifting demon to Draqueen in the form of Laamgarnas to confuse and attack Gil.
- The group in Draqueen make their way to the castle and are let into a hidden set of chambers underground. Gil and Ringleys are attacked by "Laamgarnas" who is defeated by the Black Thunder Demon. Gil recognizes the Black Thunder Demon as Laamgarnas before he dies. Delte brings back Laamgarnas' soul temporarily and he and Gil are momentarily reunited. Ringleys promises to help Gil get his memories of the time spent with Laamgarnas back.
- Cesia makes preparations to revive Rath using Zoma's body. She begins recollecting the minor souls or spirits that give Rath energy.
- Thatz and Bierrez meet Sinistera in the body of Bierrez' old friend. He says his name is Roobal and that he can lead them out of the tunnels.
- Sabel attacks the underground sanctuary where the Demon King of Arinas' soul was kept. He and Tetheus fight. Tintlet recognizes him as the legendary Water Dragon Knight from so many generations ago. A portal opens above them connecting Kainaldia with the Dragon Castle. Shyrendora's bonds on Sabel activate and try to attack the elves present and kill Sabel. Sabel summons Water before he dies, bringing the Dragon and Rune to Draqueen. Metateaura's power, now purified, reenters Sabel's body. Kitchel meets Tetheus and is taken by the Dragon Fighters to Lykouleon.
- Sinistera leads Bierrez and Thatz into a trap and leaves them to finish collecting Kharl's belongings.
- Shydeman goes through the portal with Fedelta. Fedelta has the Fire Blade and it summons Thatz via the Ice Sword. Shydeman and Tetheus remove themselves to another dimension to fight unhindered. Fedelta and Thatz fight.
- Kitchel meets with Lykouleon and gives him the Three Treasures. He tells her she needs to take Raiketa back to Rath in Kainaldia. While she waits outside for Raiketa to be given back to her, Lykouleon says goodbye to Raseleane and dies, putting his spirit into Raiketa.
- Fedelta stabs Sabel's body with the Fire Blade and opens a portal, allowing Yusurugi into their world. Yusurugi causes mass destruction and starts poisoning the land and air.
- Rath's spirit had been waiting where it was originally held hostage as the Demon King of Arinas. Gil with Fire goes to the casket and Rath transports them to Kainaldia. Rath then wakes up Sabel's (memoryless) spirit and takes him from his lifeless body the space between the dimensions where he meets Alfeegi. Alfeegi tells him he needs to find the Diamond Clover in the same dimension that Shydeman and Tetheus are battling in.
- Bierrez escapes the trap but is attacked by Shyrendora who reverts to her spider-like demon form in order to better control his mind. He escapes and she is given extra power by Nadil, causing her to be one with the castle.
- Cesia revives Rath. They have a two-page spread of their kiss before they (with Lim Kaana) go in search of Nadil.
- Kitchel is transported back to Kainaldia, along with three of the Dragon Fighters. They meet up with Bierrez and Gil.
- Thatz (with Ruwalk) rescue Sabel from where he is trapped on top of Yusurugi and bring him to Rune to guard. They realize that he is not actually dead, just missing a spirit. Thatz sees Fedelta and chases after him to finish their fight.
- Sabel meets Tetheus and is pointed the way to the tower where the Diamond Clover is sleeping. He finds the Diamond Clover--a god in the shape of a small koi/dragon--and they set off for Draqueen.
- Nadil takes Lim Kaana and Cesia while Rath searches for him. He brings Cesia to himself to taunt Rath and tosses Lim Kaana into the space between the dimensions.
- Rath finds Nadil and Cesia. Nadil reveals that Rath is the Demon King of Arinas. Rath takes Cesia and runs as Bierrez kills Shyrendora and the castle collapses. Tetheus and Shydeman both realize their sister is dead. Rath and Cesia are picked up by the others on the Fire Dragon and watch as Nadil creates a huge mech/suit of armor for himself out of the souls of the Sea of the Dead.
- Sabel finds Lim Kaana and frees her. They reach the dimension housing Dusis and step out into Draqueen. Sabel wakes up in his own body. The Diamond Clover battles Yusurugi, who is trying to destroy the balance of their world. The members of the Spirit Tribe give the Diamond Clover power. Yusurugi is defeated. Thatz and Fedelta fight. Thatz kills Fedelta but loses his left arm. Tetheus defeats Shydeman.
- Rath grabs Cesia and jumps off of Fire. He sprouts wings and catches them. Rath summons Raiketa (finally revealed to be a pistol in steampunk fashion) from Kitchel and Lykouleon's spirit and the spirit of the Light Dragon surround them. They confront Nadil while the others get under cover. Nadil threatens that Raiketa is so powerful it might also destroy the Light Dragon and reveals that he created Cesia from his, Raseleane's, and the Wind Dragon's magic. Rath with Cesia's help fires Raiketa and destroys Nadil's soul.
- Everyone in Kainaldia is brought back to Draqueen. The demons still in Draqueen disintegrate as they were formed with Nadil's power. The dragons retreat into a different dimension to rest until they are needed again.
epilogue
- Rath is crowned king and marries Cesia. Rune, Thatz, and Bierrez are officially recognized as the White, Blue, and Red Dragon Officers respectively. Gil and Sabel are officially recognized as the Dragon Knights of Fire and Water, even though the dragons have left.
- It is implied that in the coming years Thatz and Delte, Kitchel and Tetheus, and Ruwalk and Cernozura will be romantically involved.
- While everyone else is living (for the time being at least) in the Dragon Castle, Sabel retreats to the Faerie Forest to recuperate and get in touch with his past.
- Raseleane removes with Cernozura, her head lady in waiting, and Lykouleon's casket to her old castle in the mountains. She tells Rath that Lykouleon's spirit lives on in him.
- Rath takes Thatz and Rune to the secret grave he kept for the Light Dragon's body. He has enlarged it now to be a memorial to not only those who have died but also the other dragons.
